The story of Scheherazade and the tales she weaves over 1,001 nights to placate a wrathful sultan is so captivating that it set off the imaginations of many brilliant minds, including Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel. Sumptuous melodies and fantastical soundscapes define Rimsky-Korsakov's beloved orchestral suite, and Utah Opera regular Wendy Bryn Harmer performs Ravel's lesser-known and lovely song cycle. This dual exploration is beautifully complemented by Lotta Wennakoski's "Hava," inspired by music's ability to examine themes from different angles, much like novels. Oboist Luca de la Florin will present a half-hour preview lecture about the music, telling Osher members things to listen for, either during the Finishing Touches Rehearsal immediately after the lecture, or during one of the regular weekend performances. The Finishing Touches series gives audiences an opportunity to observe behind-the-scenes working rehearsals. Selections from the program will be rehearsed at the discretion of the conductor. After the lecture and before the rehearsal, enjoy complimentary brunch bites in the lobby, courtesy of various generous symphony sponsors and donors.

Storm Bowling, located in Brigham City, is the world's largest producer of bowling balls, forging up to 2,500 balls a day. Everything is done in-house including marketing and logo design by their 125 employees. First, all the raw materials are brought into a containment area away from fumes. The materials are then mixed to form a liquid resin, poured into shapes, cooled, molded, and dried to make the round balls that all bowlers use. The patterns on each Storm bowling ball are unique and random because of how the mix fills the molds, using their patented process.

Please join us for a special tour of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts' new visiting exhibition Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Mine Okubo with guest curator Dr. ShiPu Wang. For this program, Dr. Wang will provide visitors with a unique perspective on the works of art on view and the artists who created them. Dr. Wang is Professor of Art History and the Coats Family Chair in the Arts at the University of California, Merced. His scholarship thus far centers around rediscovering and reevaluating the work and legacy of diasporic Asian American artists in the pre-World War II United States, with a particular focus on Nikkei artists and their cross-racial/cultural collectives and alliances during the Exclusion Era. He was the curator of the recent UMFA retrospective Chiura Obata: An American Modern, which toured internationally.

Join us as we celebrate Osher's 20th Anniversary at the U and the 30th Anniversary of the Salt Lake Bees. We will enjoy a baseball game and dinner together at the Smith's Ballpark. We had such a great time at the Jazz game event this past March, that we have arranged for members to watch a Salt Lake Bees game (vs the Albuquerque Isotopes) from the Diamond Patio of the ballpark. The Diamond Patio is a private space, with seats that overlook the home plate. The non-refundable $59 special fee covers game tickets, dinner, and non-alcoholic drinks—tickets were significantly discounted for our group! AND our lucky, longtime, and well-loved Osher instructor and member—and baseball fan, historian, and author—Larry Gerlach will have the honor of throwing the first pitch. Reserve your space right away and join the fun!

In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, we are collecting recorded interviews with Osher members, instructors, and volunteers as they share their experiences and describe what this wonderful program has meant to them in their lives. Our goal is to share 20 stories with our membership and with people "age 50 or better" in the community who may be looking for something new at this stage of life. These recordings will be featured in our weekly email newsletters and social media accounts and archived on our website for the foreseeable future. Listen in as members tell us about how they first found out about Osher, friendships they have formed here, what favorite classes and instructors have been, and unique perspectives about how learning and curiosity never retire!
If you are interested in contributing to this very special Utah Osher 20th Anniversary project, please contact wonderful Osher volunteer Julie Myers via email jscott63@comcast.net or text or call her at 801-598-0595 to schedule your very own recording.
