We all have stuff at home we don't know what to do with. Perhaps it is difficult to part with for sentimental reasons. Maybe it is too nice to drop at a thrift store. Come learn about community resources and have your questions answered by a professional organizer.

Looking at events and people in the run-up to the Civil War, we will trace the increasingly fractious divide between slave states and abolitionists. Included will be the Compromise of 1850, the concept of Popular Sovereignty leading to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858, Lincoln's Cooper Union speech and the run-up to secession, as well as analysis of John Brown's attack at Harper's Ferry. In the second hour, we will continue with a discussion of the novel as contemporary literature. Readers and history buffs welcome! Participants should read The Good Lord Bird by James McBride.

How can we sort out all the hype, hyperbole and hysteria that accompanies the current process of electing our president? In 2024, the impacts of social media and artificial intelligence will loom large in swaying opinions! First, we will review voting history from 1945-2020. Then we will take a good look at: 1) How better voter polls are done, 2) The major election issues according to polls, 3) Party positions stated, and 4) Early outcome prediction polls. We will do some in-class polls AND apply a typical corporate assessment model (CAM) to the choice for POTUS. Just 1 in 20 voters actually decide an election! Let's be a better prepared voter and be part of the "1". We will continue to track the campaign in a separate follow up class coming in fall term.

Over two years, archaeologists and the Chinese descendant community have worked to learn more about the life of Chinese railroad workers in Utah. Come and see real artifacts from excavations at Terrace, Utah. During the excavation, archaeologists encountered hundreds of artifacts from traditional Chinese medicine jars to ancient coins. Many of these have never been seen before, and this may be your last chance before they find a home in the soon-to-be-built Museum of Utah. We will share our findings and shed light on the lives of people who played a crucial role in shaping Utah's history. Learn about the challenges they faced, their contributions, and the significance of their cultural heritage.

Serving Both Ends of the Leash
Kristina Pulsipher, Co-Executive Director, Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering
|
|
Ruff Haven’s mission is to provide a temporary safe haven for companion animals to keep pets and their people together in times of crisis, and to decrease the number of animals entering the shelter system. Ruff Haven helps with emergencies that include domestic violence, hospitalization, medical treatment, eviction, and natural disasters. Ruff Haven is the only organization in Utah that provides this service in the State. Because Ruff Haven’s focus is on pet retention, the organization offers many programs that differ from a traditional animal shelter or rescue. Kristina Pulsipher and three friends founded Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering in 2020 after seeing the need for a temporary shelter for the pets of people who were experiencing a crisis. In 2022, Ruff Haven was instrumental in passing HB175, which allows pets to be included in protective orders. Protecting all family members, which include pets, Ruff Haven is able to serve “both ends of the leash.”
