Opening Prayer

O wondrous God, on this holy day, we have gathered together once again to celebrate your presence among us, to praise you, and to thank you for all you have given us. May this time of worship strengthen and refresh us, and fill us with such joy that we cannot help but share it with everyone around us. Though we are very different people, with many different talents and gifts, make us one in your Spirit, that we may be your ministers in the world. Amen.

ATTENTION TO THE WORD OF GOD

Scripture Readings

Matthew 4:12-13, 17

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali…. 17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

7Therefore, to keep[a] me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.[b] 8 Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, 9 but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power[c] is made perfect in weakness.” So I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ, for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Liturgist: The word of God for the people of God.

People: Thanks be to God.
