Club President

By: Joe Dotterer - Club President

Since the Covid pandemic, things have been different at the range and everywhere else. Most members know but some don’t so I will give some background information on the club and our lease.

The property we are on is owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers and is part of the Flood Basin of Prado Dam. San Bernardino County leases from the Corps of Engineers and we in turn lease from San Bernardino Parks Dept as well as the Gun Range, the Golf course and the Dog Training facility across the street.

At the start of the shutdown, we stayed open to our membership and within 2 weeks of the shutdown we got a letter from the San Bernardino Health Dept to close or we will get fined $1,000, so we closed to all members. Thankfully we are now able to open back up to our members.

We tried to have our Club Intramural 3D and submitted a plan to the Parks Dept. It was based on how a golf course runs; four people per target, online registration and target assignment. That would total 120 shooters and they said NO, too many people.

We are now allowing members to bring 1 guest per visit and that same guest can only come 2 times, whether with you or a different member. You, the member, can bring a different person each time. We can open to the public now under certain conditions: limited number of people at a time on the range, including members. Under these conditions, our members might not be able to come in if we are at the maximum number of shooters and we would have to have more board members there to supervise everyone. That being said, it was decided it would be easier just to stay where we are
at for the time being.

Since the shutdown, we are permitted to do maintenance and we have been very busy getting projects done. We moved 4 targets to make the range safer. We were able to borrow a huge front loader from a member (Xenio Williams) which enabled us to redo every dirt mound behind every target on the range which made a tremendous difference. A very big thanks to Xenio and Bill Waltz for his expertise on how to run it. We are in the process of building 4 small foot bridges across the creek for 3-D shoots which will give us more options for layouts. We are still working on the cook shack and it is turning out very nice. We also got all new bale toppers put out on all the roving targets and we rotated or replaced all the roving and practice butt bales.

That’s it for now but when something changes we will send out a email to let everyone know.
Stay Safe

Hey there Oranco Bowmen

I hope everyone is well and making the best of the current situation. Ideally you've been getting some range time in and keeping up on your archery skills. We are now allowing members to bring a guest up to two visits before they have to join to continue to use the range. Remember all County and State covid-19 regulations must be followed at all times while visiting Oranco archery range.

We will try to shoot the Bowhunters 3D championship that was postponed from May 28th sometime this year if the state and County large group ban on sporting activities and tournaments is lifted. If not we'll reschedule for 2021. Because the awards banquet has been canceled this year we've decided to post the results of the Champ Shoot from earlier this March.

It was an especially tough tournament this year with high winds and rain but for those of you who toughed it out congratulations!!! Below are our Oranco Bowmen Champ Shoot 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and participants!

I'd like to thank everybody for participating in the club Champ Shoot this year. I'd also like to thank everyone who helped in making this event such a success! I'll send out an email blast for a date to pick up awards and take pictures with the club Champ Shoot Trophy.

Thank you,

Mark Houston

Greetings Oranco Members and Prospective Members! It has been a crazy couple of months.

Like many of you, I’m disappointed that Oranco remains closed to the public and so many archery events are being cancelled or postponed. Oranco is subject to San Bernardino County COVID requirements and all proposals to reopen must be approved by the County. Specifically, we are challenged by requirements to limit occupancy and enforce face masks and social distancing (especially at the practice butts where folks tent to bunch up). We are also are strictly prohibited from hosting tournaments during Phase 2 reopening under COVID. We continue to brainstorm ideas on how to reopen on a limited basis, but it is a long exercise in patience.

Until then, I’ll echo some of the recent announcements and ask that everyone BE SMART about social distancing and maintain safe physical distance from one another at the range. If you encounter folks that can’t keep their distance, please ask them to leave the range.

I hope you and your families are staying healthy and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

● Unfortunately, the Big Game Shoot and Firecracker 3D were cancelled. Our next invitational Tournament is the Tomahawk 3D on October 10-11, contingent upon San Bernardino County allowing tournaments/sporting events under COVID rules.
● The Oranco Bowhunters 3D Championship was also cancelled but we will look into rescheduling as COVID rules allow. Like the Champ Shoot, this event is open to members, prospective members, and their guests. ● Check out the CBH Event Calendar for additional tournament dates and updates on cancellations throughout California. Riverside Archers is open and has hosted a couple tournaments in the last month or so. El Dorado and Mile Square Park are also open to archery.
● Ladies – If you would like to learn how to shoot tournaments/league or just want to shoot archery with other women sometime, we’re going to put together informal lady’s group once the COVID-19 crisis is over. Please contact Amanda Duchardt at ob.secretarty@outlook.com if you are interested.

● Oranco’s Winter League final shoot date is postponed. The League Chair is considering a proposal to cancel the last date and announce winners based on the top 3 scores instead of the top 4 scores.

● Classes will resume when Oranco reopens to the public. FREE one-hour class usually held on Saturday mornings; RSVP required. Please check out our website or contact Vernie Urbano at archer@vernie.biz or 714-928-4100 for more information and to RSVP.

● JFA will resume when Oranco reopens to the public. Check out the website for more information as available. Participation is free for members and children under 11. Guests are $14. No pre-registration required. Please contact David Bacon at ob.membership@outlook.com or 909-217-4441 for more information.

● Joe is managing several projects around the range. Please reach out to Joe at 951-897-5685 if you need work party credits and have a few hours to help.
● Stay tuned for additional Saturday work party notices via email.
● When we reopen to the public, most Board members will need assistants to help with duties and opening the range on Sunday. Work party credits available. Check out the Contact page on the Oranco website and reach out if you are interested in helping.

· The California Big Game Draw has concluded and the A Zone deer opener is July 11. I wish you all luck and don’t forget to turn in your game cards to Jose Lara if you harvest an animal. Hunt awards for 2020 are up for grabs including the Big Buck Award, Oranco Bowhunter of the Year, and Species Awards. Ask Jose or check out the Oranco By-Laws on the website for additional information and rules.
· The Oranco Banquet was cancelled so 2019 Hunt awards will be posted to the website soon and winners can pick up their awards in the Oranco office. Please coordinate with Jose Lara.

● The range is closed to the public until further notice. Members are allowed one guest at a time. Your guest can visit the range twice per normal Club rules and then must apply for Membership for continued access.
● Jose Lara and Bill Waltz are now members of the Oranco Board of Directors. Jose has been assisting our Hunt Chairman Bill Leal for over 6 months and has been assigned as Bill’s delegate for the remainder of the Board term. Bill Waltz was also appointed as the new “Special Board Member” (aka Two-year Board Member) as Al Wiscovitch is now the League Chairman.
● Custom shirt/sweatshirt order has been delayed due to COVID. We hope to complete the order in July.
● Oranco now boasts a total of 5 certified archery instructors supporting our JOAD program! Congrats to our new instructors!
● The Oranco Annual Banquet is cancelled. All awards and recognition will be posted to the website soon and you can coordinate with Board Members to pick up your awards. Congratulations all and we look forward to celebrating with you at next years’ banquet.
● Current membership count: 427; Prospective members: 31 and counting. Annual membership renewals were sent out in May and the gate code changed on June 1. Please do NOT share the gate code with current or former members. If an individual has completed all renewal steps, they have the gate code!!! Please contact Membership Chairperson David Bacon if you have questions.

Want to be informed or get involved? Our next club meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July14 at 7pm. Due to COVID restrictions, meetings are open to Board Members only. However, you can all or email Ob.Secretary@outlook.com for options to review the meeting minutes via conference call/web the following weekend. As a reminder, all prospective members need to attend 2 Club Meetings and participate in 2 work parties to become an Oranco member.

Club Meeting Minutes are available in a binder at the Club office or email Ob.Secretary@outlook.com for a copy. The Summary of Board/Member Actions from the last meetings are included below.

Hi All,

I hope you are all safe and well. As you already know, membership renewals went out on May 1st and everything has gone quite well. So far 70% of our members have renewed their membership but we are waiting on a few to send their CBH or NFAA card which is a great improvement over last year. That said, it is still very important for you to send us a copy of your association card when you get a new one so we can keep our records up to date.

Currently we have 317 members including 25 prospective members. If you haven’t received your renewal invoice please let me know at ob.membership@outlook.com so I can get it to you.

Thank you,

David Bacon

Hi everyone,

Hope everyone is keeping them self’s safe and your love ones?

I know you all would like to get back to shooting our Oranco archery leagues at the moment we are under wraps till we get the green light to start shooting again.

I know many of you would like to finish our last 3-D league shoot, but till they give us the green light we are static. I did tell Joe, that we would hold off a few more months and see what happens. If we can’t finish our 3-D league we will then change the format to best 3-out of 4-shoots. So if you have completed 4-shoots then we will throw your worst score out and use your best 3-shoots.

As always,

Thanks for supporting our events at Oranco and let’s hope that this pandemic problem ends soon!! Any question you may have for me please text or call me…

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings . We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.

Range Beautification Party : We would greatly appreciate your help and support to the upcoming Work Parties. Keep an eye out for the email blast. All Club Members and their families are invited. Per Joe Dotterer, Club President there will be an “ ALL YOU CAN EAT LUNCH ” served for ALL of our Volunteers who come out and help.

Your assistance ensures that the Oranco Bowmen Archery Club remains the best in Southern California. There is a reason why people travel from all over California to shoot at our Archery Club. Get involved and help us out.
Cook Shack Workers Needed : Positions are still available for volunteers to help out during the upcoming shoots. Tony Tobinis back and will be taking over Cook Shack Assignments effective immediately. Terry Lopez will no longer be accepting calls for Cook Shack volunteers.

Please contact Tony Tobin in order to reserve your spot at: Cell# (626) 354-2268 . Due to poor cell service in his area please contact him via TEXT message to assure he can receive your information. First Come, First Served.

Target Camping : This is NOT Allowed...Period. Your Membership will be terminated for doing this! The Practice Butts are for sighting in, improving your archery skills, and honing your accuracy. The Roving Range is just that, Roving. Shoot 4 arrows, Score them, then move on to the next target.

You have been warned. Don't do it. It is not worth it.
