Great Places to Cycle:
North East Ontario
|
|
Experience the rugged, yet stunning beauty of northeast Ontario by bike. Start with comfortable urban riding along interconnected paved pathways in and around the city of North Bay. Ride out along the
Kate Pace Way and along the waterfront before connecting to the Cranberry Trail that ends overlooking Callander Bay on Lake Nipissing.
Road cyclists can stretch out along
scenic rural road routes between North Bay and Mattawa; while trail riders have plenty of routes to choose from that wind through dense forests, wetlands and the Canadian Shield. The region truly offers cyclists an array of experiences that are suitable for all styles and skill levels.
Featuring two designated Canadian Heritage Rivers; the Mattawa and French rivers, as well as the Ottawa River and Lake Nipissing; cyclists in the region frequently come across stunning views, especially when riding the rugged cross-country trails that make up the
Voyageur Multi-Use Trail System or mountain biking on the
Laurentian Escarpment in North Bay.
An easy way to get to know the area by bike, is to sign up for the September 12 cycling event,
Shred the Shed, riding along roads and trails, criss crossing watersheds and ancient portage routes.

Rail Trail Weekend:
June Ride Recap and Itinerary
|
|
If you are a regular reader of our monthly enewsletter you would have seen info we shared prior to our June 20 to 21 Ontario By Bike Ride, and small group rail trail tour riding from Uxbridge through the Kawarthas, ending in Lakefield. We have now posted full ride details, maps and our weekend itinerary on-line for anyone to download and make plans to enjoy the same ride, as it was an incredible experience, enjoyed by all. We were awed by the variety of beautiful scenery, from marshland to farm fields, dense forests, vast valley outlooks and water views all trailside from the Kawarthas Trans Canada Trail and following the Trent Severn Waterway. We enjoyed the fine hospitality from bicycle-friendly businesses, including the new Days Inn and Suites Lindsay that sits a stone's throw from the trail, Kawartha Dairy Barn in Lindsay, the Olympia Restaurant Cafe in downtown Lindsay, as well as the Silver Bean Cafe in Peterborough, among many others. Along with the suggested online itinerary, view the photos from the weekend to decide for yourself: a) Ride the Uxbridge Kawartha rail trail as we did in June. Download full ride details here. b) Sign up to join us for our next weekend ride - Hamilton Brantford Paris Port Dover rail trail, September 19 to 20. www.OntarioByBike.ca/rides2015 |
#1 Summer Ride Destination: Beach
|
|
It's hot out there! Whether you are book ending the start or finish of a ride, or riding with this as your direct destination and motivation, nothing feels better than a cool dip and a little beach time. Riding to the beach and back is a perfect way to get out and explore more of Ontario By Bike. Here are our 5 top picks for beach rides this summer, with links to our regional Great Places to Cycle resource trip planning page for each: * Port Stanley - Road routes and the Waterfront Trail will heat you up before hitting this sandy stretch and southwestern Ontario beach. * Port Dover - Connect to the beach from as far away as Hamilton, Brantford or Cambridge using off-road rail trails. * Georgian Bay - Multiple beach stops, provincial parks, road routes and trails. By road connect to Wasaga Beach, in Simcoe County. In Grey County, using the Georgian Trail, swim at Craighleigh, Thornbury or west of Meaford. * Toronto - Ride east along the Waterfront Trail to swim at Blue Flag designated Cherry Beach and Ashbridges Bay, or all the way to Rouge Park Beach, 31km from downtown. * Prince Edward County - Looking for long white sandy stretches, dunes, shallow warmer waters, the beaches at Sandbanks Provincial Park are some of the best. Located in the County, there is plenty to see and do pre or post ride. Visit the following sites to help find the beach that fits your ride and holiday plans: Ontario's Southwest - Best Beaches Website; Ontario's Southeast - Best Beaches Blog. Don't like sand between your toes? Try riding at the following destinations, both with lots of classic Canadian Shield rocky outcrops and forested lakeside stops: Haliburton Highlands or Parry Sound District. Where ever you end up, stay cool and hydrated, to enjoy summer riding at its best. |
