One Health, the SDGs and Economics
World Bank Report. Investing in pandemic preparedness contributes to poverty alleviation, especially because infectious diseases tend to affect poor people disproportionately more than others. To succeed will require a multipronged effort to persuade policy makers and communities to take measures of the political economy, cultural environment, and embrace a “One Health” approach which recognizes human health as connected to that of animal health and the environment requiring multi-sectoral engagement when mobilizing and allocating resources. It will mean convincing decision-makers that they should not ignore what is important in lieu of what is urgent and make preparedness a priority, persuade the private sector to invest in it, and do so in a sustainable manner.

A new program administered by the National Institute of Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education (NIAMRRE), will soon give producers a better way to demonstrate to consumers that they follow responsible animal care principles. The 1HOPE initiative provides an opportunity for individuals from around the world to collectively get involved in educating the public about One Health. Working groups are forming and will focus on education in six categories: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Civil Society / Community, (includes Non-Profit and Non-Government Organizations, NGOs), Corporate , and Government (includes Intergovernmental Organisations).

We envision a world where people of all ages in civil and governmental organizations apply a One Health and Well-Being (OHWB) approach - recognising and respecting the interconnections and inter-dependencies among humans, animals, plants and the environment – thereby collaboratively addressing the issues that face us all and striving to ensure the sustainability of the planet.
Main Aim:
To build and support global capacity for understanding and valuing the One Health & Well-Being concept and approach as the foundation for achieving the UN-2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

1st Annual Report of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB)
Created in May 2018 by the World Health Organization and the World Bank Group in response to recommendations by the UN Secretary General’s Global Health Crises Task, the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) is an independent monitoring and accountability body to ensure preparedness for global health crises. Comprised of political leaders, agency principals and world-class experts, the Board provides an independent and comprehensive appraisal for policy makers and the world about progress towards increased preparedness and response capacity for disease outbreaks and other emergencies with health consequences. This comprehensive overview of the international state of preparedness for health threats provides 7 high-level recommendations. It finds that the world is facing a high risk of regional and global disease outbreaks with potential devastating social, political, public health, and economic consequences; this in the face of diminishing institutional trust. Additionally, even though many pathogens have pandemic potential, the fast-moving nature of respiratory pathogens presents unique challenges that we are wholly unprepared to face.

Armenia is now equipped with a Central [veterinary] Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL) and with Portable Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (PVDLs) stationed in five major cattle-concentrated areas in the country. Providing the PVDLs was a visionary project of Dr. Hazarabedian (1930-2003), founding Chair of A.T.G. who always used the term “Animal Health/ Public Health” – a concept that is now promoted worldwide as “One Health”. “Recognizing that human health (including mental health via the human-animal bond phenomenon), animal health and ecosystem health are inextricably linked, One Health seeks to promote, improve, and defend the health and well-being of all species by enhancing co-operation and collaboration between physicians, veterinarians, other scientific health and environmental professionals, and by promoting strengths in leadership and management to achieve these goals.” A.T.G. vision statement, “One Health is dedicated to improving the lives of all species – human and animal – through the integration of human medicine, veterinary medicine and environmental science.”

The end of 2019 marked the conclusion of training for four fellows in the One Health Eastern Africa Research Training (OHEART) program at Ohio State. Supported by the National Institutes of Health Fogarty, this program strengthens capacity of four eastern African academic institutes located in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania through a
PhD and post-doctoral fellowship program

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. On January 20, 2020, as part of its Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) worked with the School of Nursing and the School of Dental Medicine at Penn Vet's annual One Health Dog & Cat vaccination clinic to offer free and low-cost healthcare services to both people and their pets. The vaccination clinic has taken place since 2009; but this year for the first time, pet owners were also able to address their own personal dental and health concerns with assistance from registered nurses and students from the Nursing School and the Dental School.

Arizona Departments of Health Services developed a comprehensive One Health toolkit to better address the many One Health issues facing public health, such as vector-borne diseases and zoonoses driven by wildlife diversity, social-economic disparities, and extreme weather events. During toolkit development, the health department identified a lack of documentation outlining partner roles and responsibilities. Neglected One Health Issues
|
|
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can contaminate the environment, drinking water, recreational water, and food. They are an emerging public health issue. Exposure to HAB toxins through water, food, or air may cause a range of mild to severe symptoms in both humans and animals. HAB-associated exposures can result in symptoms that affect the skin, stomach and intestines, lungs, and nervous system. Animals, such as dogs, cattle, birds, and fish, are likely to be affected during a HAB event before people, as they are more likely to drink from or swim in waters that contain HABs. People can be affected by HAB events from exposure during work or recreational activities, or from ingestion of contaminated water or food. https://www.cdc.gov/habs/ohhabs.html

Clinical Scholars is one of several programs created in the U.S. by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to develop a network of strong, interdisciplinary leaders from every sector working to create a nation where everyone can reach their best possible health and well-being. It is a 3 year leadership development program for experienced health practitioners including pharmacists, physical therapists, veterinarians, dentists, social workers, nurses, physicians, and many others working in clinical or academic settings. Scholars work in teams of 3-5 individuals from diverse disciplines to design innovative projects addressing a complex health problem in their geographic region.
