One Grand Miracle

“The Christian story is precisely the story of one grand miracle, the Christian assertion being that what is beyond all space and time, what is uncreated, eternal, came into human nature, descended into his own universe and rose again, bringing nature up with him. It is precisely one great miracle. If you take that away there is nothing specifically Christian left.”

-from “The Grand Miracle”, God in the Dark

Interfaith Discussion Tomorrow

We invite you to join an online community of different faiths for zoom discussions on various topics using the Qur’an, Hebrew Bible and New Testament. Discussions will be moderated by Ashley Brown in conjunction with the Rose Castle Foundation. Each discussion will be 10 a.m.-12 p.m. The first discussion will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) and will focus on empathy. Please email ashley@scapc.org to register. The next sessions will be May 8 on the topic of vulnerability and July 10 on the topic of lament.

Guest Preacher & Guest Teacher

This Sunday, April 14, we are excited to welcome José Manuel Capella-Pratts, and Vilmarie Cintrón-Olivieri, Presbyterian Church (USA) Regional Liaisons to the Caribbean. Their work in the Caribbean helps us to connect to the larger work of the church and our global neighbors. José is a Minister of the Word and Sacraments with degrees in psychology and theology and studies in Pastoral Care of the Family, Leadership, and Preaching. For both morning services, he will preach a sermon titled, “Witnesses of the Good News” on Luke 24:36-48.

Vilmarie is an educator, consultant, and ruling elder and has served the PC(USA) at the local congregation, presbytery, synod, General Assembly, and related entities and church committees. She will lead a Sunday School class on the connectional nature of our mission work in the Presbyterian Church and how we are building partnerships between churches in the U.S. and in the Caribbean.

The Global Ministry Committee is sponsoring a luncheon following 10:30 worship in the Land Building, and all are invited to this time of fellowship and connection. Please RSVP to David Grissett at dgrissett@hotmail.com, by tomorrow, April 10.

Audubon Park Walking Group Kicks off Sunday!

All are invited to a newly formed "Walking Group" for all ages to share fellowship while getting exercise and fresh air together! This Sunday at 5:15 p.m., any interested individuals can meet Christina Carlisle at the front doors of the church on St. Charles Avenue. The group will depart at 5:15 p.m., make one loop around the Audubon track, and return (approximately one hour).

Churchwide Day of Service - April 20

We will be working with Eden Centers, Café Reconcile, New Orleans Mission, Program of Hope, STAIR, and the Junior League Diaper Bank. There are projects for all ages and abilities! Sign up in Frampton Fellowship Hall this Sunday or at this link.

Sunday School Details & Recordings

PHILIPPIANS AND GALATIANS

March 24 - May 19 | Phifer Library

The letters to the Philippian and Galatian congregations illustrate the passion and intensity of Paul's writing. Together these letters provide a compelling portrait of a theologian and social critic of rare power and insight whose legacy continues today to spark heated debate. For the April 7 class recording, click here.

The April 14 class topics will be "The Worth of Our Resumes" and "Participation with Paul in the Mission of God's Grace", led by Michael O'Keefe.

DEVOTIONALS FOR A "GOOD ENOUGH" LIFE

April 7 - April 28 | 2nd floor conference room

Throughout this month, we will examine the search for “enoughness” and spiritual reflections on living a “good enough” life. Using devotionals from Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie’s book Good Enough, we will discuss embracing a life of faith, honesty, and interdependence in a world that celebrates endless progress.

CALLED AS PARTNERS IN CHRIST'S SERVICE

April 7 - April 28 | Land Building Riverside Room

Our faith is one that is not merely an intellectual or personal spiritual pursuit, but one that encompasses our whole lives and influences the ways in which we interact with others and the world. We’ll explore the theological and scriptural underpinnings of discipleship, mission, ministry, and the Church. We will be discussing current “best practices” of mission and how together we can make the greatest impact on our community.

The April 14 class will be led by Vilmarie Cintrón-Olivieri (see guest teacher announcement) on the connectional nature of our mission work in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and how we are building partnerships between churches in the US and in the Caribbean.

Cuban Missionaries Visit

On Sunday, April 21, we are excited to welcome Rosa and Gustavo Rodriguez, owner/operators of Rosa's Bed and Breakfast where many of our members have stayed during trips to our sister congregations in Cuba. Gustavo is an engineer with Living Waters for the World, the organization with which SCAPC partnered to install water filtration systems at El Fuerte and Juan G. Hall Presbyterian Churches. Rosa is the manager of Dora Valentin Presbyterian Church. They will be assisting in the "Called as Disciples" Sunday School class and with the College Cuba Trip fundraiser in Frampton Fellowship Hall. Their weekend will also include a riverboat cruise, Covington tour, and group meals. For a list of weekend activities to attend (including sign-ups) click here.

Balloon Pull Fundraiser for College Cuba Mission Trip

Join our college students and visiting Cuban friends on April 21. Grab a balloon to support our college students as they explore Cuba in May. Donations will be used for supplies, expenses and support for our students and our brothers and sisters in Cuba.

Camp RHINO Part-Time Staff Search

Our RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans) program is looking for a part-time staff member to support the over 150 campers we are going to welcome in June and July. Camp RHINO welcomes youth and adult participants from churches all over the country to New Orleans for a week-long experience of service, mission, and learning. Staff is needed to help us welcome these volunteers, provide hospitality, and support the overall mission and goals of the program. For more information, see this job description and contact Pastor Sarah at sarah@scapc.org with any questions and inquiries.

On Friday, April 19 from 5-7 p.m. in the Land Building, come celebrate and listen to the debut of Taylor Swift’s new album “The Tortured Poets Department”! Make friendship bracelets, drink lavender haze lemonade, and wear your best T-Swift inspired outfit (or don’t!) Bring your own libations and a treat to share (ages 21+ only). Please RSVP by April 16 to ashley@scapc.org.

Delivering Food Drive Items

After filling her car to the brim with donations from the Lenten Food Drive, Katie Brendler delivered the items to happy volunteers and staff members at the Broadmoor Food Pantry. Thank you to all who contributed food during the food drive last month!

Children's Message

During the 10:30 service on Sunday, Miriam Hollar led the Children's Message, demonstrating a "miracle" to a captive audience, alluding to the 2nd scripture lesson of the service, John 20:19-31.

Challenger Class

On Sunday, the Challenger Class (4th and 5th graders) tested out their paper airplanes while learning about Jesus’ ascension. Pictured from left are Raven Breaux, Buddy Mackenroth, Caroline Wheeler, Evan and Pearson Eubanks.

Easter Fun with the Aden Program

Last month, a host of Easter bunnies from the SCAPC Nursery School visited SCAPC's Aden Program for elder care on the Land Building porch.

Eclipse-Watching

Yesterday, members of the SCAPC staff sought out the best spots to view the eclipse. Lynn, Hallie, and April took to the church roof, and Chris H., Chris C., and Michele (with Ashley photographing) had more luck viewing from the Land Building lawn.
