Hello Lisa,

My days can fill up quickly with emails, phone calls, Zoom calls and signing papers. But whenever I hear from the community partners where our volunteers are working – it is golden! Like the letter from Hope DeSoto Long Term Recovery Group in Arcadia, Florida, who we partnered with in rebuilding homes after Hurricane Ian, which struck in September 2022.

“Words are truly not enough to express our gratitude for what you—volunteers and friends— have done for us in DeSoto County!” the letter reads. “Without you all, and your amazing generosity, we would not be so far down the road of recovery.”

MDS supported the long-term recovery in DeSoto County after Ian dropped half a year's worth of precipitation in mere hours, causing the Peace River to overflow and flood thousands of homes.

“We know that you take meticulous notes on the physical needs that you all meet,” reads the letter. “From the number of volunteers to the number of paint cans—everything is calculated. However, I would bring to your attention the lives restored, the relationships mended in the community, the smiles on faces, and the joy in hearts that cannot be measured or counted.”

The letter also says that MDS has done much more than repair roofs and paint walls.  “You have shown the love of Jesus Christ shown to others through the putting on of a roof and the painting of a wall,” the letter reads. “For that, we are thankful too.”

I want to pass those words of thanks on to volunteers who served not only in Arcadia, but anywhere. “Each and every one of you will have a special place in our hearts always,” the letter reads. “We are truly blessed to have had you in our lives.”

May we continue to show the love of Jesus,

Kevin King, Executive Director

We can go home now!

Nine-year-old Owen Nichols cut the ribbon on a new bridge in Iron Station, North Carolina on June 29, officially dedicating the state’s first bridge built by Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) volunteers, who spent about eight days working on the concrete-supported structure.

Situated at the end of a private unpaved road spanning Reed Creek, the bridge is 11 feet wide, 60 feet long, and sturdy enough to hold a fully loaded fire truck—and then some.

Never moments

(Elaine Maust, Guest contributor)

Every morning on his way to work, contractor Ken Hollinger passed a black space. He knew two area homes recently burned.

Between cancer treatments and work, however, there was never enough time. Besides, he and Suetta, his wife, had a spring tradition of volunteering for MDS in the south.

Ken never intended to build a house in Germfask.

Hope after setback

“It was eerily quiet.”

Lytton, British Columbia, villagers moved as if in slow motion while the temperature climbed to a Canadian record high of 49.6 C/121.3 F. There was hardly an insect or bird in sight. And no wind.

That’s what Owen Collings remembers of the days leading up to a wildfire that flattened his community on June 30, 2021.
