CPP named among 'Top 100 Schools for Hispanics in 2019' |
The Hispanic Outlook on Education named Cal Poly Pomona in its "Top 100 Schools for Hispanics" 2019 list, with the Department of Architecture placing No. 2 in its Top 10 Architecture Schools category — up from No. 8 last year.
The rankings were provided by the U.S. Department of Education for the magazine's October/November 2020 issue. In 2019, it counted 184 Hispanic students who graduated with B.Arch degrees from Cal Poly Pomona.

Street Tectonics (Athenna Lim)
This year's theme reflects on the dialogue surrounding housing in Los Angeles and other urban centers across the country. The 2x8 virtual exhibition is open to the public through December 31.
The department's presence this year include the involvement of lecturers in exhibition design (Garet Ammerman), event programming (committee co-chair Kirill Volchinskiy), and in the November 12 panel "Right to Housing" (Barry Milofsky and Allyne Winderman). ART
The department hosted its Annual Art History Lecture Series earlier this month featuring Egyptologist Marissa Stevens, assistant director of the Pourdavoud Center at UCLA. Her lecture, "The Art of Egyptian Funerary Ritual," examined the use, manufacture, and the artistic and literary significance of funerary papyri from Egypt's 21st Dynasty (1069-945 BC).

L.A. Forum's Delirious LA also featured a September Q&A with Associate Professor Anthony Acock. The interview covered ranging from future projects and synthesizing different media (text, image and a vinyl LP), to the racial justice protests after George Floyd's death. Reflecting on designing LA Forum's Summer 2020 issue, Acock said it sought to reach and resonate beyond its traditional architecture, design and planning audiences.
"We decided to translate as many parts of the newsletter into Spanish as we possibly could," he said. "We also determined to make the 2020 newsletter free for download. Emphasis was put on extending the accessibility of the document both financially and culturally."

Cal Poly Pomona's VCD program is No. 9 according to Animation Career Review's 2020 Graphic Design Rankings. while the art history program has the distinction of being one of the only two in the California State University system to offer an independent B.A. in Art History. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
The National Association of Minority Landscape Architects (NAMLA), founded by lecturer Steven Chavez and alumni Sara Abed ('14) and Alejandro Armas ('18), now has an official website and secured its nonprofit status. The Cal Poly Pomona student chapter launched in November.
NAMLA was created in July to address the lack of people of color in leadership roles in practice and academia, and to confront structural racism. Among its plans are to provide educational and career development assistance.

URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
Second-year graduate student Questa Gleason received the 2020 Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship along with $4,000 and a one-time $145 stipend to participate in the virtual proceedings of the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in January.
The fellowship program is managed by the Technology Partnership Program under the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. Since 1983, it has awarded more than $50 million to aspiring transportation professionals.

The department invites nominations for the 2021 William R. and June Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban and Regional Planning. The program will be virtual.
Awarded in pairs (practitioner and scholar), the Dale Prize awardees will participate in a March 3 colloquium to present their work in the field, and then spend March 3-4 interacting with students in classes and through various events.

REGENERATIVE STUDIES
Interim Director Pablo La Roche discussed designing for mental health in a Q&A profile celebrating World Mental Health Day. La Roche is the associate vice president of CallisonRTKL's Los Angeles office and the firm's Performance-Driven Design leader in charge of implementing sustainable design.
"I often look at healthcare design through the lens of sustainability," he said. "I’ve seen we’re moving from a less traditional 'institutionalized' setting towards settings that have more connection with their community and less isolation for patients."

When the American Institute of Architects' Large Firm Round Table Sustainability Group (LFRT-SG) convened for three sessions in October to discuss the intersection of architecture, climate justice and social justice, it invited "three emerging leaders" — graduate students Kathleen Blakistone ('20) and Lydia Olivier ('21) and alumna Dani Slabaugh ('20, master's in landscape architecture).

In Memoriam: Michael Reibel, Ph.D.
The Cal Poly Pomona community is invited to a virtual celebration of life honoring Professor Michael Reibel, who taught in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) and at the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies. He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on November 12.
Reibel was an urban geographer and demographer with research expertise in neighborhood scale social demography, neighborhood effects in public health, and geographic information systems (GIS). A staunch advocate of labor unions and social justice, Reibel imbued his research and teaching with these elements.

IV | Artist self-portraits are often revelatory. With Kenneth Hamel IV ('20, graphic design; minors in art history and studio arts), what you see is what you see. On the 20x20-inch acrylic painting he submitted for lecturer Ann Phong's Studio Art (VCD 3362A) class, Hamel said:
"One of the quotes I stand by is from Paul Rand and he said, 'Don’t try to be original, just try to be good.' The painting was simply a direct representation of a profile image of myself taken by one of my colleagues, Justin Oo. I wanted to challenge my observation skills to see how accurate I could make the painting look like IV, me. It was as simple as that. I think a lot of artist and designers at a young age get caught up in trying to be original. For now, my goal is to try to be great then focus on inventiveness and individuality later down the road."

The Epidemic Urbanism Initiative seeks papers exploring the present and future implications of the COVID-19 global pandemic for its fourth virtual conference in January 2021. Papers may be submitted for the following tracks:

Call for Entries: EDRA52 DETROIT | January 8
The organization has created a new submission type to accommodate research disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. The "Work in Progress" submission type requires a 300-word abstract describing your research and addressing concepts, methods, preliminary results, and future directions. Submissions undergo a double-blind peer review and will appear in the "Work in Progress" section of the EDRA52 proceedings. Learn more here.
