Fall Mixer program shines spotlight on Club's Charitable Programs
It certainly was an evening of camaraderie, fellowship and appreciation at last month's Fall Mixer!
Club President Robert Rickett emceed the evening which featured beneficiaries of the Club's Charitable Programs. Kicking off the program was Tristram Dodd from the Freeport-to-Port O'Connor Toy Run. Ronald McDonald House and Shriners Hospital were represented by Jeff Lawhorne and Angela Bernard, respectively, and both expressed interest in adding a second Fun Fishing Day for their kids and families.
Turning Point's Brent Novelli shared his appreciation for the Club's support of the annual Drum Tournament. He noted that the tournament is always looking to expand participation in the youth categories and asked everyone to please refer kids with mobility impairments to the event.
Scholarship recipient Baylor Nix also shared his personal story and passion for the sea, boats and fishing. His emotional presentation and deep gratitude for the Club and its Scholarship Program impacted everyone in the room.
Thanks to all the donors and sponsors who helped make the 2019 Fall Mixer one to remember!

Captain's Corner
Written by Captain Kevin Deerman
Thanksgiving has passed again, and it's time to start gearing up for another Wahoo season.
Teams up and down the coast are already getting registered for the Winter Wahoo Championship which runs from January 1st through March 31st.
Hopefully, we can get some of these guys to enter their Hoo's in the Club's Yearlong Awards Program as well since participation in the Wahoo category has been down for the past few years. Don't forget our sponsors at Jeco's Marine and Serious Tackle for any of your tackle needs, and please release the Weehoo's!
Merry Christmas to everyone!

The Learning Curve
Written by Captain Troy Day
Conservation & Education Committee
December 2019
As we go into the off-season and begin thinking about boatyard visits and projects, I was thinking the only reason we're hauling the boat this year is to strip and recoat the running gear. Over the years, I have heard more speed and load issues from propellers being dirty than all other reasons combined. To combat this, we run the boat every 1-2 weeks throughout the year. For about the last 10 years, PropSpeed seems to have been the way to go, and has served us well, but we end up having to reapply it each year, where the bottom lasts 2. Before that, most used various mixes of bottom paint, primer, and barrier coats.
Just this year, I have seen people beginning to experiment with a form of powdercoating on wheels, but I have not heard back on its success. Another one I've had positive reviews on, and am considering trying this year is "Mussel Buster Propeller Protection". The downside is you have to ship your wheels to Florida, but a friend used Mussel Buster and is just now having to recoat 4 years later. Getting yearly maintenance costs down without cutting corners is always a priority, and as technology improves, there is always something new on the horizon.
