In the early morning hours on Sunday, March 5, 2023, South Coast Water District (SCWD) and Laguna Beach Fire and Police Departments responded to a sinkhole on Sunset Avenue and 10th Avenue in south Laguna Beach. Water and mud heavily ran down 10th Avenue onto south Pacific Coast Highway. On Sunset Avenue, SCWD staff discovered a sinkhole developed beneath a parked vehicle causing it to partially fall in and sever the gas meter.
An estimated 110,000 gallons of water were discharged and reported to the local authorities. The cause of the 8-inch water line leak is still under investigation, pending further analysis from geologists and structural engineers. The 8-inch water line that leaked was made of PVC, with a typical lifespan of 50-75 years, and was installed in 2004. All customers in the area were fitted with temporary water services, and gas services were restored the same day.
SCWD staff, and their contractors, will continue to work with the community to clean-up homes, monitor the area during wet weather, and restore normal water and sewer services. For more information, please visit SCWD.org/LBleak.
