Sturbridge, M.A. - Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) has announced the grand opening of its new Cabinetmaking Shop on Saturday, Oct. 9, in conjunction with a full Woodworking Weekend taking place Oct. 9-11. Part of a more than five year vision at the Village, the Cabinetmaking Shop will join the Commons area of OSV and invite visitors in to learn about historical woodworking through presentations, demonstrations and more. The grand opening of the new shop is the culmination of countless hours of work and a highlight of OSV’s 75th Anniversary Celebrations, which kicked off in June 2021.

Sturbridge and the surrounding region were home to some of the foremost rural cabinetmakers of the early 19th century. These woodworkers were integral to 19th-century rural New England communities. The Village used both historic and modern building methods in the construction of the shop, which is patterned after period structures operated by early 19th-century craftsmen.
The Cabinetmaking Shop, created by craftsmen and interpretive staff working in the Village, includes a wood-burning stove - as did many free-standing shops of the period - and a small external woodshed. The large timbers for the construction of the shop were even cut by the Village Sawmill. A history of the project, construction and progress pictures, including a miniature scale model of the shop as it was envisioned in 2018, can be found at: https://www.osv.org/explore-the-village/cabinetmaking/.

Woodworking Weekend, celebrating the opening of the new Cabinetmaking Shop, is packed with activities and will include panel discussions, presentations, painting demonstrations using period-style paints and pigments, sawmill and whittling demonstrations, architecture tours and more. Several special activities will be offered on Saturday only, including a panel discussion of the nearly acquired sideboard in the Old Sturbridge Village Museum Collection and a presentation by Philip Zea, President Emeritus of Historic Deerfield. A full list of activities for the Woodworking Weekend event can be found online at: https://www.osv.org/event/woodworking-weekend/.
The Cabinetmaking Shop, grand opening, and activities taking place during Woodworking Weekend are included with Standard Daytime Admission or membership to Old Sturbridge Village. Guests are encouraged to reserve tickets online and in advance for their date of arrival. Tickets can be found online at: https://www.osv.org/plan-your-visit/.
