2024 OATFCS Summer Conference

The Ohio Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences invite you to attend the 2024 OATFACS Summer Conference on July 29-30, 2024, in Lewis Center, Ohio! The OATFACS Summer Conference provides professional development opportunities designed specifically for Family and Consumer Sciences education teachers looking to excel in the classroom, boost their Career Technical Student Organization, and strengthen the field of Family and Consumer Sciences. Attendees will receive up-to-date professional development training, share ideas, and network with other Family and Consumer Sciences teachers from across the state.

Youth Group Fundraising Opportunity 

Are you or someone you know involved in a youth organization that is looking for a fundraising project? The Dairy Products Building at the Ohio State Fair (home of the famous butter cow) is looking for groups to scoop ice cream! Various schedules are available, and no prior experience is required - just bring a fun attitude and a willingness to work to earn money towards your organization. FCCLA Night at the Ballgame 

If you are attending FCCLA Night at the Ballgame, be sure to pack a clear plastic or vinyl bag no larger than 12” x 6” x 12” or a small clutch bag no larger than 4.5”x 6.5” (does not have to be clear). Larger bags or backpacks are not permitted into the ballpark. For additional gate and bag policy questions, click here.

Seattle Pride Parade-Road Closures 

While in town, Seattle will be holding its 50th Annual Pride celebration, which will culminate with the Seattle Pride Parade on Sunday, June 30th. The parade will take place on 4th Avenue. Street closures for the parade on Sunday, June 30, from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. include:

• 3rd Ave from Denny Way to S. Washington Street 
• 4th Ave from Denny Way to S. Washington Street 
• 5th Ave from Denny Way to S. Washington Street 

All attendees should plan accordingly to avoid these roads throughout the day. Attendees staying at the Charter Hotel and Hotel 1000 may need to take a different walking path this day due to planned road closures. Please note that this is a popular event, so the city may be more crowded than usual on this day.

Ohio FCCLA is looking for Education and Training educators to assist with Ohio Only Career Development Events review. Tentative review dates are Friday, July 19, 2024, and Friday, August 2, 2024. Any Education and Training educator willing to serve as a Subject Matter Expert needs to contact Christie Jackson by Friday, July 5, 2024. Career Development Events being reviewed:

Ohio FCCLA Chapter Cheer Contest

New this year, Ohio FCCLA is introducing an exciting way to involve every chapter at the National Leadership Conference! During the Ohio State Meeting (8:30-9:30 p.m., room 420-422) each chapter will be called on to share a quick and spirited cheer or chant. The most fun, creative, and energetic chapter will be crowned the winner! The Executive Council is eager to hear your cheers in Seattle. For any questions about this thrilling new opportunity, reach out to any Ohio FCCLA Executive Council Member. Let’s make some noise! 

Important NLC Reminders

All advisers/chaperones must turn in the Adviser/Chaperone Consent Form on site in order to pick up registration materials. All advisers/chaperones must watch the 15-minute video prior to signing the form. The video can be found on the FCCLA website here or in the Portal under Resources > 2024 National Leadership Conference. 

National Leadership Conference Transportation

Once you arrive at the airport, you will need to make arrangements for ground transportation to the hotel. The airport is approximately 13 miles from the various hotels. Plan ahead by reviewing the options below for transportation between the airport and the hotel. Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail makes trips from downtown Seattle and SEA Airport. Trains arrive every 8 to 15 minutes, depending on the time of day, and take about 40 minutes to travel between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Westlake Station in downtown Seattle.

• Adult Fare: One-way adult fares range from $2.25 to $3.50 depending on how far you travel.
• Sound Transit requires fares on all buses and trains, except for youth 18 and under. 
• Apply for a Free Youth Transit Pass: You will need to upload a copy of your K-12 student ID, state ID, driver’s license, birth certificate or passport to confirm your age.
• Show your Current High School ID or Middle School student ID to the driver as you board and to any transit official upon request.

Ride Share Services

• Lyft: Cost estimate is $42-$75 one-way
• Uber: Cost estimate is $50-$75 one-way
• Taxi: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) offers both Flat Rate Taxis and Metered Taxis. Metered taxis charge per mile/time and can be identified with a three-digit vehicle number and are painted a single color. Flat rate taxis offer a flat rate based off zip code and use a four-digit vehicle number and are painted in two colors.

Seattle Tips

Bring a reusable bag with you as Seattle does not provide customers with single-use plastic carryout bags. The plastic bag ban applies to restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, convenience stores, farmers markets, food trucks, temporary stores, and home delivery services. Check out the cute FCCLA bag options at the onsite store! 

Please note that the Seattle Convention Center Summit building is a cashless center as well as other retail and restaurant establishments. Ensure you have a valid credit card, debit card, cash card, or Apple pay to use while in the city.

STAR Events Finalist Session 

The FCCLA STAR Events Finalist Session is designed to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional achievements of the top ten (10) national finalists in each STAR Event and level. The top ten (10) national finalists will be brought onstage to be honored for their outstanding performance. During the session, the top three (3) winners of each STAR Event will be announced live on stage, by level, and each winner will receive a plaque in recognition of their hard work, dedication, and remarkable accomplishments. 

FCCLA will notify all competitors and their chapter advisers of the top ten (10) national finalists via email no later than Tuesday, July 2 at 3:30 p.m. PT. 

If you are named as a National Finalist, your family and friends can purchase a pay-per-view link to watch the session live on the FCCLA website. Those who purchase a pay-per-view link can also watch a recording of the session within 48 hours after the conference. Additionally, family members who are local to Seattle can purchase a session pass to attend the session in person. These passes can be purchased at the registration desk and will only be available for purchase on July 2 and 3.
