A Message From The President & Executive Director
We hope you are planning to join us at the Leadership Conference in Austin, Texas on November 12-13, 2019!

The conference attendees and presenters are a virtual “who’s who” in gerontological nursing. The sessions and the setting allow you the opportunity to meet them in a personal setting. The Leadership Conference is not just for nurses – it is interprofessional with social workers, psychologists, physicians, and others as speakers and attendees. There are many opportunities to meet potential collaborators in the field. The conference is exciting and includes international members and presenters. Gerontological nurses are passionate about their field and they come here to participate in provocative, challenging, and informative presentations and dialogue. 

In addition to an awesome program, we will enjoy the “Keep it Weird” city of Austin. The convention center and hotels are located just a few steps away from the downtown entertainment district that includes 6 th Street.
Live music is readily accessible every night of the week. Parts of the entertainment district are blocked to vehicles and you can only enter on foot. Hundreds of world class restaurants are located within walking distance for your dining pleasure. Lady Bird Lake has hike and bike trails right across the street. 
If you are able to catch the bats that come out to feed at dusk each night over the lake, it is an awesome spectacle. You can experience this from many restaurants and bars along the lake, or you can book a boat ride or kayak tour to see them from the middle of the lake.

Scooters and bikes and bicycle cabs are readily available to go for a scenic ride around town. There are also many tours available to visitors. The Texas Capitol is just a short hop away and you can easily take a self-guided tour on your own time and pace.

The weather in Austin is generally fine, with average highs in the 70’s in November and only 4 days of rain. Evenings have average lows in the 50’s.

The aim of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate Certificate in Gerontology program is to train people to think critically about the issues of aging and how to support the wellbeing of adults as they grow older. The program is the result of a collaboration between University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR), the College of General Studies (CGS), and the Aging Institute of UPMC Senior Services.

The University of Pittsburgh Graduate Certificate in Gerontology serves as a helpful complement to many other degrees. Whether you´re a researcher, a nurse, a social worker, a rehabilitation specialist, or just someone who´s passionate about the issues of aging, you´ll be able to craft a program that fits your special interest. Our specializations include Law, Mental Health, Nursing, Occupational Therapy/Rehabilitation, Public Health, Social Work, Gerontechnology, and two multi-disciplinary tracks--General and Prevention & Healthy Aging.
The Final Countdown!
Mary K. Wakefield, PhD, RN, HRSA Administrator was named to the administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) by President Barack Obama on February 20, 2009. HRSA works to fill in the health care gaps for people who are uninsured, isolated or medically vulnerable. The agency uses its $9.6 billion annual budget (FY 2011) to expand access to quality health care in partnership with health care providers and health professions training programs.
Peggye Dilworth-Anderson, PhD, is Professor of Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC). Dr. Dilworth-Anderson’s areas of expertise include family caregiving to dementia patients, minority aging and health, and chronic disease care and management in cultural context. Her overall research focus is on health disparities with an emphasis on building knowledge to inform, researching, translating and disseminating information on chronic disease care and management in medically underserved populations.
NURSES: This education activity will be submitted to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners for approval of up to 23 contact hours of accredited education.
PHYSICIANS Application for CME credit will be submitted to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending.

MayDay Scholar Award Program
The goal of The National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (NHCGNE) MAYDAY Scholar Award Program is to increase academic gerontological nursing capacity in the United States by increasing the number of well-prepared gerontological nursing faculty with interest in alleviating the incidence, degree and consequence of human physical pain. MAYDAY Scholars, in collaboration with a senior mentor, will implement a tailored professional development plan which supports development of new competencies and enhanced effectiveness as an academic leader in geriatric pain and research. The program is committed to advancing qualified applicants from underrepresented minority groups to improve the nation’s ability to provide culturally inclusive care to its increasingly diverse aging population. Members of underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply. This program is designed to support 2 years of doctoral work (PhD) for nurses committed to careers in academic gerontological nursing with an emphasis on pain.

University of Oklahoma HSC PhD Scholarship Available!
The Reynolds Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, College of Nursing, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center announces new $150,000 PhD Scholarships available in 2019-2022 supporting full-time PhD study in Nursing, with a focus in adult and older adult healthcare. The Scholarship offers up to three years of support with a value of $50,000 per year for tuition and fees, conference travel and a monthly living stipend. The PhD Program is fully online providing strong individual mentorship with visits to campus for intensives. For more information click the button below or contact Denise Short.
APRN Specialty Certification in Gerontology
The Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association‘s mission is to promote excellence in advanced practice nursing for the well-being of older adults. GAPNA offers its members the support they need to continue their personal and professional growth by hosting cutting-edge conferences on developments in the field, as well as by providing online educational experiences such as webinars and online courses. These tools are meant to enable each member to perform to the fullest scope of their education and potential.
This year, GAPNA supports the Gerontology Nursing Certification Commission in the new APRN Specialist Certification Exam for highly skilled APRN who is looking to validate their skill in managing the care of older adults. 
Special Interest Group for International Engagement & Development (SIG-IED)
Claudia Beverly,  past president of NHCGNE, began the development of a special interest group for international development in the fall of 2017. By April 2018, the Special Interest Group (SIG) was created with representatives from domestic and international NHCGNE centers. The group was renamed the Special Interest Group for International Engagement and Development (SIG-IED). The goals established focused on promoting global membership and involvement in NHCGNE by expanding the existing networks and enhancing international members’ access to the organization’s resources.  Claudia Lai,  The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and  Elizabeth Beattie , Queensland University of Technology, serve as the Chair and Co-Chair of the SIG-IED.

The SIG-IED will be sharing more information on their work and aspirations at the annual NHCGNE Leadership Conference, November 12-13, 2019 in Austin, Texas.

With the world now being regarded as a global village, international development will certainly enhance the impact of NHCGNE on capacity building of gerontological nurses worldwide, as well as on the promotion of health and quality care for older adults and their families.

Clinician Educator
Unique clinical faculty positions now available
The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing seeks visionary master’s-degree or doctorally prepared physician assistants and nurse practitioners to join our faculty and provide clinical care as well as hands-on education. These clinical educators play a hands-on role in the development of high-impact and interprofessional programs at our innovative, new school while they also provide care.

Clinical practice
Clinical educators provide health care in local, community settings approximately 80% of the time. The clinical placements may be at UC Davis Health in Sacramento or in another regional, partner setting. Clinical educators provide direct patient care and precept graduate School of Nursing family nurse practitioner and physician assistant students. This includes overseeing procedures, providing feedback and assisting with training. These clinical educators also participate in building and role-modeling team-based care in clinical settings and serving as an exemplar for interprofessional practice. 

The remaining approximately 20% of time, these faculty participate in an educational capacity, which includes teaching small groups, participating in clinical skills workshops as well as mentoring and guiding students. The educational component also includes scholarly activity and committee service.

Nursing: Nursing- Doctoral (DNP/PhD) Faculty
East Carolina University College of Nursing is currently seeking applications for a full-time 12-month faculty position to teach graduate students in the Adult Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP), and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialties.

  • The College of Nursing research emphasis areas include broad areas. Teaching will include courses in the BSN to DNP Program (AGPCNP and FNP) and Post Masters DNP options, assisting with clinical evaluation (site visits), academic advising, and participating in DNP Projects. Fixed term or tenure track available to the title or rank of Instructor or higher.

Minimum Qualifications Include:
  • A valid non-restricted North Carolina registered nurse license is required upon employment.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing required along with terminal degree (DNP, PhD, or related terminal degree). Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Three years of advanced practice clinical experience.
  • Approval to practice as an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner in North Carolina upon employment.
  • National certification as an AGPCNP.
  • Scholarship activity, effective oral and written communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills to work with a diverse population of students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse faculty and student body.
  • Experience Mentoring Students.
Faculty, Nurse Researcher
The Wake Forest School of Medicine and Wake Forest Baptist Health Division of Nursing invite applications from faculty candidates with a career commitment to research for a position with the School. PhD in Nursing (or DNSc) preparation is required. Candidates eligible for this position will have demonstrated strong potential for developing a program of funded scientific research, particularly in the areas of aging and population health. Those whose research aligns with other priorities in the school’s strategic plan will also be considered (Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Neuroscience, Diabetes, Regenerative Medicine).  

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an externally funded research program, advise nursing doctoral students, and mentor students, nursing staff and faculty in research.
