The Why, What and How of Domestic Violence Offender Accountability & Court Mandated Batterer Programs
VCS Inc. of Rockland County & Catholic Charities of Buffalo
October 1-2, 2015
New City, NY
In 1978, VCS Inc. developed the first batterer program in NYS. Ten years later, VCS partnered with Catholic Charities of Buffalo NY to best resolve controversy generated by batterer programs regarding their purpose. Are programs appropriate as treatment and rehabilitation or best used for accountability and monitoring? Can they achieve both? By listening to the collective wisdom of battered women's advocates across the country, the NY Model for Batterer Programs was developed. This clear and replicable design contributes to the efforts to eliminate and prevent domestic violence. Measurable outcomes support the efficacy of NY Model Batterer Programs. The training is designed for judges, court clerks and other court personnel, probation and parole officers, prosecutors, defense bar, and domestic violence advocates. This training is also useful for those who work in batterer programs and with domestic violence offenders in other venues, especially CASAC and CPP professionals. Follow this link

The Mask You Live In - Film Screening & Panel Discussion
SUNY Albany, NYSCADV, NYSCASA, Equinox, In Our Own Voices, The Legal Project, and more !
October 14, 2015
Albany, NY
Is American masculinity harming our boys, men and society at large? T
he Mask You Live
In explores America's narrow definition of masculinity. The documentary presents the personal narratives of young boys and men and features experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media, further exploring how gender stereotypes are interconnected with race, class, and circumstance.
The Mask You Live In
ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.
"Just as our culture has harmed women and girls, so too are we harming our boys, which has led to a 'boy crisis' in America," said the film's creator Jennifer Siebel Newsom. "Our intention is that this film sparks a national conversation around masculinity and helps our boys overcome limiting stereotypes, encouraging them to stay true to themselves."
The screening will begin at 5:30 PM in Page Hall at the SUNY Albany Downtown Campus. Admission is free, and refreshments will be provided. Panel Moderator: Lorien Castelle, NYSCADV. Panelists: Mike Fonda, Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Assistance Program; Bill Schafer, Northen New York A Call to Men; Walter Simpkins, Community Fathers; Felix Abreu, UAlbany Mentors in Violence Prevention. The Beauty of Survival
Violence Intervention Program
October 22, 2015
New York, NY
Over the years,
The Beauty of Survival has grown into a celebration of female empowerment and community activism. Since 1984, VIP has served victims of domestic abuse and family violence by providing services that include a live-operarated (24/7) Spanish-English emergency hotline, emergency and supportive housing, counseling, advocacy, economic empowerment, children & youth services, immigration support, financial literacy, case management, and other life skills training. More importantly, without these services, thousands of the most vulnerable victims would be without resources or the type of support that enables them to rise from a place of isolation and into a community that embraces all in love and support.
The Beauty of Survival is also a moment for us to thank those individuals who continue to advocate in favor of victims through policy reform, community education, public action, and activism. Our struggle in the anti-violence movement is impossible without their support and it is imperative to us that we recognize the impact their actions make. Follow this link
