LGBTQ+ History Month

October 2023

The history of LGBTQ people and our culture is rewarding, eye-opening, and important in today's world. The stories of resistance to oppression (like Stonewall and the Compton Cafeteria riots) are obvious milestones, but LGBTQ people have been central players throughout history. Though often erased from what is taught in schools or portrayed in movies, we have been present and participated in every historical moment, from the American Revolution to 9/11 and the ongoing effort to live up to our nation's ideals of equality and liberty for all.

Learning the stories of our past can enrich our own lives, remind us of how far we have come in our struggle for equality (and how much further there is to go), and give us heroes of all gender expressions to embolden us when times get tough.
