Sneak Preview of "New" Atrium

Many finishing touches yet to come, but this is a preview of the work that has been accomplished by our faithful volunteers. The Gardens are especially blessed with some talented carpenters and other capable worker bees.

We cannot thank these individuals enough for all they do. The building would never be where it is today without the volunteer help we have been fortunate enough to recruit.

Watch for our next issue to view the finished product, and remember we are currently available for rentals for weddings, group events, both small and large and inside or outside. Call Gina Morey for more information at 256-237-6766, Ext. 325 or visit the Anniston Museum site for a quick overview of available spaces.

"Nothing says Christmas better than fresh greenery! I chose to use my wreath as a ring around a tall centerpiece at our dining room table. The fragrance and lack of needles shedding everywhere made our Christmas season more wonderful!!"

NOVEMBER
THIRD THURSDAY
Hollies and Osmanthus
for Alabama

November 16, 2017
5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

The hollies and false-hollies are an excellent group of trees and shrubs for Alabama landscapes. Both species are tough plants that thrive in our summer heat and humidity but reward us with evergreen foliage, berries, and blooms in autumn and winter.

The tiny flowers of Osmanthus (see below) add fragrance rivaled by few other southern shrubs. The hollies add festive berries in the holiday season that are perfect for decorations and greenery.

Join us to see a selection of the false-hollies and true hollies that make your garden stand out in the cooler seasons.
The program will be held in the James P. Roberts Education Room at Longleaf Botanical Gardens. To reserve your spot, call Anniston Museum of Natural History at 256-237-6766. Reservations are required, and space is limited to the first 35 people to register. Cost is $5.00 per person and free to members. Payment is to be made at time of registration.

October Gardening Tips

Watering -   If rains taper off, be sure that your plants don't get stressed, especially shallow rooted plants like camellias and azaleas, and everything in containers.

Don't Forget the Birds - Fill bird feeders and birdbaths to attract migrating and local birds.

Potatoes & Tomatoes -  Just before frost, dig your sweet potatoes. Also pick all your green tomatoes.

Planting - Plant turnips, mustard, kale, rape, spinach, and onion sets.

Compost - Get ready to begin your fall compost bins with all the debris left from your summer garden, adding fall leaves as they begin to fall.

Bulbs - It's time to begin planting tulip, hyacinth, daffodil, crocus, Dutch iris, anemone, and ranunculus bulbs. Dig caladiums; clean and store in warm place.
