Volunteer Update

Dear valued CRC volunteer,

I love the fall. My husband and I seek out fall colors every year at least for a day. It is usually a quick trip to Julian for a hike and a slice of apple pie, a sip of cider and profuse sweating (since I insist on wearing flannel despite the California weather refusing to chill). We have also enjoyed the East Coast’s brilliant display of maples, the soft yellow birch groves in the Midwest and the Eastern Sierra’s vibrant aspens.
A friend quoted the above in an offhand way recently and it struck me as being a timely reminder. A reminder for those of us who haven’t gotten a haircut since March, who are fighting against the passage of time or who desperately wish that it was still 2019. I am not always the best at just “going with things” but I appreciate those who do. Just like the leaves that provide a warmth and a promise of something new to come when they just let go. CRC Volunteers have collectively taken a breath, and stepped in to the “very different” this year with a flexibility and grace that is admirable.
For each of you who has embraced virtual volunteering, contact-less food distribution, face coverings, extra waivers, a new Holiday Baskets format, and jumped in to help wherever needed ... thank you. And for those of you who are still taking a break from volunteering until the COVID threat is reduced or gone, you are still part of CRC. I hope you can enjoy and embrace the changing season and the beauty it brings!

Volunteer & Shopping to Show Your 🧡
Apparently, “Fall Cleaning” is a thing. While lots of people cleaned out their closets in April and May, the trend continues into October. CRC’s Encinitas store can receive upwards of 100 drop-offs on a busy Saturday! With lots of new inventory to receive, wipe down, sort through and display, our volunteers are more important than ever.
If you have not considered volunteering at one of our three stores in the past, this is a great time to jump in! If you just need a little retail therapy, please consider stopping by one of the stores to show your support. All proceeds from sales go to fund our efforts to alleviate hunger, homelessness and Domestic Violence in our community (20% of CRC’s income comes from the stores!). As an extra incentive, we are offering a coupon for the month of November below!
Volunteer shifts are available 10:30 am - 1:30 pm and 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm at all three locations. To volunteer, contact: srosenbaum@crcncc.org.

Holiday Baskets
Holiday Baskets is a beloved program and near to my heart. I enjoy partnering with the 2,000 of you who make it a priority each year to volunteer and make it a success. I love to hear the stories that come out of your time sorting, packing, distributing and hauling carts. I love to see the pictures of your smiling faces and the smiles of those who we serve. COVID-19 has been unexpected and challenging for programs like Holiday Baskets that utilize so many volunteers and serve so many.
Holiday Baskets is still happening, but it is going to look very different from year’s past. In order to provide a safe, contact-free drive-thru event, our volunteer need is significantly smaller. Because of this, we will likely not be able to schedule general volunteers for this year’s event, including the following:
- Teens and Youth
- Families
- Large Groups
If you are a past or current sponsor group or volunteer, we will reach out to you in November with any openings we may have. We are still figuring out what our limited volunteer need is going to look like. CRC is grateful for your understanding and continued support despite these changes.

How can you still support Holiday Baskets?
We still need your help to supply 900 families and 200 seniors with items to make their holiday brighter. Please consider the following opportunities to partner with us for 2020:
As we get nearer to the holidays, CRC will provide a “Food Drive Advent Calendar” and other ways families can get involved. We understand the life-long value of instilling philanthropy in our youth and want to support that.

For the third year, CRC is pleased to recognize one outstanding volunteer at the Annual North County Philanthropy Council’s (NCPC) Volunteer of the Year Awards. While CRC has many incredible volunteers, Amie truly stands out.
