October 3, 2017
From the Director's Desk

It is hard to believe that October is upon us. Summer was just here, literally with summer weather just leaving us.  However, fall is certainly setting in. George Eliot once said, "Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."

Autumn certainly is a beautiful time of year. One literary classic I like to dust off during this season is "Anne of Green Gables," by L.M. Montgomery.  This book is about an 11-year-old orphan who makes her home with an adoptive family on Prince Edward Island.  Anne's description of the scenery at Green Gables captures the charm and warmth of autumn.  "October was a beautiful month at Green Gables, when the birds in the hollow turned as golden as sunshine and the maples behind the orchard were royal crimson..."

The truth is, right now in October 2017 we live in a world of heightened uncertainty, social judgement, and changing norms.  I find that classic literature is an escape to a safe place because sometimes we just need to shut the sound bites and media images off.  Major sporting franchises are not trying to make  statements and nuclear bomb threats are not a consideration in my escape to Prince Edward Island in 1908.  I find that classic literature is a place I can travel to and encourage others to travel where things are good, wholesome, and understood.

So this autumn as you enjoy all the season has to offer, take time to pull out one of your favorite classic novels and get lost in a predictable world.

See you at the Library!

LIBRARY STAFF SPOTLIGHT: MARIE LOSER

Marie Loser is the library's financial manager.  She is in her thirteenth year as an employee at the Nazareth Library.  Her responsibilities include overseeing the library's financial processes and she works as a circulation assistant.

A true supporter and library advocate, Mrs. Loser feels that a community library provides immense value to its patrons. "It's a place where people can get things done.  They can search job openings, clip coupons, find a book, or learn a new technical skill," says Mrs. Loser.  "The different programs we offer also encourages community involvement and addresses the public's interests and needs."

In Appreciation to our Community Partners

Last month we opened an additional parking lot at the library.  We were able to landscape the new parking lot area through the generosity of the  Main Street Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the   Nazareth Business Council, and material donations from ABE Supply, Northampton County Seed, Lehigh Valley Home & Garden, Blue Barn Nursery, Tall Timbers Nursery and Appalachian Creations.

Thank you to all these community partners for helping us complete this project!

8TH ANNUAL TOUCH A TRUCK
Here's a truck, there's a fire engine, everywhere there's wheels and horns!!!
Bring a smile and take home great memories. It's time for the Library's Touch A Truck at Tuskes Community Park of Upper Nazareth ( 3040 Bath Pike, Nazareth) on Saturday, October 7th  from 10am to 2pm.

Climb on fire trucks, explore a police car, see the inside of emergency vehicles!  Get up close to a cement mixer, sit on a school bus, visit a library on wheels!  Toot a horn, make a craft, eat some goodies, watch a helicopter land on the field!  At the end of the day, wave good-bye to the parade of vehicles as they say good-bye to the new friends they made at this year's Touch A Truck.

This event is held rain or shine.  Upon entering Tuskes Park, all ticketed children will receive a "goodie bag" that also contains an entry to win a bicycle donated by Curt's Cyclery (make sure you get your entry stamped at the places you visit).  Everyone, age 2 and older, needs a ticket.  Tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased at Tuskes Park entrances on Saturday but there are some advantages if you buy your tickets before October 7th:
1.  You get 5 tickets for $20.00  or single tickets for $5.00 each.
2.  For every ticket you purchase at the library, you receive an entry for a "Touch A Truck" gift basket.

Tell your friends, make a day full of memories, go to bed with a smile on your face. All proceeds from Touch a Truck benefit the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity.
