Alma Artisan
Tina Schowalter
Alma, Wisconsin

Tina Schowalter, owner/tile maker of Alma Artisan, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and an emphasis on sculpture.  Three years later she became obsessed with making handmade tile after she created her own kitchen back splash.

"Horizon" 6" x 8" ceramic tiles

Small hand-shaped porcelain pieces, with finger prints showing, are arranged with the intention of being mistaken for nature.  When making this work Tina sits quietly, meditatively, committed to a larger whole.  Her mind rests and she becomes renewed.  These sustainable artists' hardboard relief panels are intended to be hung as artwork.

This medallion was featured on the poster for the Art Tile Exhibition at the Edina Art Center this past January.  To see more of her medallions and ceramic panels, on her website, check out this link.

"The Long Way Home" 36" x 24" Abode Art Gallery

Many of Tina's pieces are currently showing at Abode Gallery in Stockholm, WI through November 7th.  The show is entitled "Earth," featuring artists who work in clay, metal, stone, glass and soil.  There's still time to take a fall trip to check out this exhibit.

Stone Hollow Tile
Wendy Penta
Blaine, Minnesota

Wendy Penta, owner/tile maker of Stone Hollow, creates her applied clay tiles in one of two ways: relief designs are lifted from molded tiles, then manipulated and reshaped; the rest are hand sculpted, forming one-of-a-kind shapes, which are then applied to the clay tile base, adding dimension and depth.

"Pine Silhouette" 4" x 8" shower niche

Working the design out directly on the tile with various sized brushes, she hand applies the glazes, ensuring no two are alike.  Her relief tiles are smooth, easy-to-clean and are ready to hang or suitable for installation.

"Corn Diagonal" 6" x 6"

Stone Hollow Tile is ideal for adding an Arts & Crafts touch to kitchens, showers or fireplaces.  For decorative ideas, check out the images on Stone Hollow's Architectural page.

"Style Tree" 4" x 8"

Stone Hollow Tile can be found at several art fairs each year.  These tiles will be available again this year at Peggy's Holiday Boutique in the Roseville Skating Center, 2661 Civic Center Drive in Roseville, from November 5th through November 13th.  Free parking is available.
