RESIDENTS IN THE KNOW

About Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC)

Founded in 1975, AHC Inc. is a nonprofit developer of affordable housing that provides quality homes, education programs, and social services for families living on low and moderate incomes in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

AHC contracts third-party companies that manage its apartment communities. These companies have onsite staff, including community managers, maintenance teams, and leasing staff. AHC also has Resident Services (RS) onsite representatives of AHC. AHC’s Resident Services program reaches 3,000 children, teens, adults, and seniors annually through onsite education, social service programs, and activities.

AHC wants to connect with our communities, so we started this newsletter to share updates. Please contact us if you have feedback or ideas for newsletter content.

AHC Inc. has officially rebranded to Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC)

Along with the new name, AHC now has a modern logo that embodies a spirit of welcome, opportunity, and renewal. Affordable Homes & Communities is more than an affordable housing developer. AHC builds opportunity by creating quality homes with holistic resident services.

“Our vibrant new logo symbolizes the open doors we offer individuals and families seeking a better future,” says President & CEO Paul Bernard.

“Our rebranding builds on AHC’s past successes and represents a key step in our evolution and growth.”

The rebranding also paves the way for AHC’s updated mission, vision, and values, along with a five-year strategic plan, to be announced at AHC’s Annual Celebration in October. The introduction of the new logo marks a pivotal moment in AHC's journey. AHC’s many stakeholders, including residents, provided valuable input that went into the development of AHC’s new name and logo.

“Our new branding better reflects who we are and aim to be,” says Bernard. “We look forward to working with our partners to ensure we keep our residents at the heart of all we do.”

Hearing From our Residents!

Residents are at the center of AHC’s work. Hearing from residents is essential to ensuring our community programs and experiences are meaningful. Earlier this year, in March and April, we reached out to all of our communities to ask 3 questions.

  1. What does home mean to you?
  2. What does community mean to you?
  3. What can AHC do to help build community?

Thank you to all who responded to the surveys and in-person outreach. The data and information we received helped us inform our strategic planning.

In addition to surveys, we also asked our teens to write short essays about this topic. We had 3 winners from our communities.

Scan QR code to watch this short video about our resident engagement initiatives and hear the teens talk about their experiences and ideas about what the community and home means to them.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Here are some ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Visit the American History Museum's Molina Family Latino Gallery. The current exhibition being showcased is called "Presente A Latino History of the United States. This exhibition showcases and explores the history of Latino Americans.

Festival Latinoamericano on October 15, the annual Festival Latinoamericano will be held at the Arlington Mill Community Center from 1-5. There will be food, traditional performances, and activities for children.
