Hearing From our Residents!

Residents are at the center of AHC’s work. Hearing from residents is essential to ensuring our community programs and experiences are meaningful. Earlier this year, in March and April, we reached out to all of our communities to ask 3 questions.



1. What does home mean to you?

3. What can AHC do to help build community?

Thank you to all who responded to the surveys and in-person outreach. The data and information we received helped us inform our strategic planning.

In addition to surveys, we also asked our teens to write short essays about this topic. We had 3 winners from our communities.

AHC is hiring!

AHC is hiring a Part-time on-call substitute for AHC afterschool programs. Must be available from 2:30-6:30pm weekdays from Monday-Thursday.

Responsibilities include:

Assist students in K-5th grade with:

• Leading activities
• Maintain positive discipline
• Preparing program including meal prep and clean up
• Other duties assigned

We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Here are some ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Visit the American History Museum's Molina Family Latino Gallery. The current exhibition being showcased is called "Presente A Latino History of the United States. This exhibition showcases and explores the history of Latino Americans.

Festival Latinoamericano on October 15, the annual Festival Latinoamericano will be held at the Arlington Mill Community Center from 1-5. There will be food, traditional performances, and activities for children.

Ingredients:

• 7 cups of water
• 1 cup of long grain white rice
• Cinnamon Sticks
• 1 12-ounce can of evaporated milk
• 1 14-ounce can of condensed milk
• 1 cup whole milk
• ¾ cup raisins

For topping:

• Ground cinnamon

Instructions

1. In a medium-sized saucepan on medium high heat, put the water, rice and cinnamon sticks in. Bring this to a boil.

2. Leave this uncovered until the rice is tender.

3. Strain out all the liquid, make sure to keep the rice. Optional: throw out the cinnamon sticks.

4. Return the rice into the saucepan and stir in the evaporated milk, condensed milk, and whole milk. Leave cooking over a high heat until the mixture comes to a boil.

5. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking. Leave uncovered and stir constantly until the mixture thickens.

6. Once mixture has thickened, add the raisins and stir well. Top with ground cinnamon, to taste, and serve!
