OCTOBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

BABC OC – QUESTION TIME!

1.  What is your hometown and country? I was born in Bermuda. My parents are originally from Dublin (Sandycove) and moved to Bermuda in the early 70’s and plan was to be there for a few years. They are still there! I went to boarding school in Ireland at 13 initially Clongowes (Co. Kildare) but the Jesuits had enough of me and went to Blackrock College (Co. Dublin) where my Dad and ultimately my brother went.
2.   What year did you move to the US and why? We bought a house in Great Park (Irvine) October of 2019 which is when they moved with our first born Oliver. I was still going through the green card process anticipating summer of 2020 it would be completed. I had given work my 6 months notice back in Bermuda and was flying back here every 3/4 weeks with the goal of moving in April 2020 as expecting bay No 2 end of month. Flew over in March for a “week” and that is when Covid took off and a week turned into 6 months! My wife is originally from OC happy wife happy life as they say!
3.   Where do you work and what’s your job title? I have recently joined Morris and Garritano as a Commercial Risk Advisor (Property and Casualty) one of the largest independent insurance agencies in California for almost 140 years. We have expanded into OC and move into our office November 1. I am extremely excited to work with such an amazing company and responsible for driving new business. Their legacy as a full service insurance agency of service and building long term relationships is really what attracted me to this opportunity, not to mention honestly one of the best teams all around in the industry. I couldn’t be more thrilled for the untapped potential and building new and lasting friendships. I also have my California license (Life and Health) and still consult as a V.P. with Independent Capital Management in Newport Beach. I have been in insurance for over 20 years. Primarily in Bermuda which is the largest (captive/reinsurance hub) I began my insurance career with Marsh and McLennan as an excess casualty broker for Fortune 500 c0mpanies. I then became Senior Broker with Gallaghers (Bermuda) working primarily Property Faculative (placing coverage for hurricanes in Florida and up the east coast, as well as Cal quake and fire) All the multi billion dollar disasters! I then worked with HSBC Captives (Bermuda) for almost 10 years with 400 clients and $600M AUM.
4.   What’s your favourite word? Sonder
5.   What’s your least favourite word? Can’t
6.   What’s your favourite sport or hobby? Favourite sport is rugby (played national team but after 12 surgeries finally had to call it a day!) My father started the World Rugby Classic in 1988 which is an annual event back in Bermuda for ex internationals (over 33) and teams include (Classic Lions, South Africa, Argentina, Canada, New Zealand, US, Canada and Italy. Its also one of the biggest sporting and corporate events on the island as clients fly in for meetings during the day and hosted at the event during the evening at the games in their various tents. Golf is my passion and happy I can swing a club pain free (for now) Also truly one of the best experiences to get out and meet new people and network and test your patience!
7.   What profession other that your own would you like to attempt and why? A fighter pilot as always dreamt of being one from an early age. Although being 6’3 230 lbs not sure I would have fit in the cockpit. I did have try outs with the New England Patriots as a kicker/punter scouted while in college in New England (twice) and in hindsight wish I had maybe tried harder.
8.   If you could go back in time, knowing what you know now about living and working in OC what advice would you give YOU, arriving here on Day 1? To be honest nothing. I moved to a new country at the beginning of Covid and a new baby and life threw me a curve ball that I wasn’t expecting. Life hit pause for many people and it was making the most of the sudden change and focusing on the positives and that brought me a new level of patience and insight I didn’t have before! That changed me for the better both personally and professionally.
9.   What's the best advice anyone ever gave you in OC? I would have to say my wife. We had just recently moved here and I was still in the process as awaiting my green card and Covid etc. pushed that back an additional year almost. She said “sometimes things happen for a reason and life is never a written book. Its what you do with the chapters that define you. Be positive and be the best person you can and good things will happen” I got a year of time to spend with my 2 amazing boys (Oliver and Aidan) and wife! More that I expected and would never ever change that for the world to watch them grow. Truly a blessing in disguise (plus some golf)
The second best piece of advise is: “Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it on a fruit salad” Brian O’Driscoll (former Irish Captain of Ireland and Lion rugby Legend and Blackrock alumni)

New Truss administration sets out its pro-growth ambitions in dramatic fiscal statement
BAB CEO Update
September 2022

An astonishing period in UK politics culminated on Friday 23rd with a dramatic series of budgetary announcements made by the new Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, in a what was billed as a ‘fiscal event’ but was, in reality, more consequential than most annual budgets of the last 30 years.

The new administration, led by Liz Truss, set out its stall as a pro-business, pro-growth, pro-aspiration government in what felt like a clear break from the social democrat consensus that has dominated British politics for the last two decades.....READ MORE
Welcome to the BABN’s September Policy and Trade Update.

As we head into October, BAB will launch its Annual Policy Agenda, which outlines the top priorities and areas of importance for the transatlantic business community in the coming months. The document drives BAB’s wider policy activity and engagement with policymakers and key stakeholders on both sides of the Atlantic.

Also coming up this fall will be more information about the UK DIT’s ‘International Trade Week’ and the 6th US-UK SME Dialogue in November.

Finally, the autumn party conferences have begun, and we anticipate further details on the direction of the new government under PM Liz Truss following the announcement of a new mini budget this month. Meanwhile, the US midterms move closer.
