Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In September, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue:
  • Completed removal of old asphalt along westbound Route 7 between Baron Cameron Avenue and Amanda Drive.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way:
  • Started drilling for noise barrier posts along westbound Route 7 east of Colvin Run Road (west end).
  • Storm sewer installation between Baron Cameron Avenue and Colvin Forest Drive continued.
  • Began grading for eastbound Route 7 shared use path east of Baron Cameron Avenue.


  • Continued earth-moving activities at the intersection of Route 7 and Baron Cameron Avenue.


  • Started drilling for noise barrier posts along eastbound Route 7 on the east side of Colvin Forest Drive.
  • Installed storm sewer for eastbound Route 7 west of Serenity Woods Lane.
  • Placed embankment for eastbound Route 7 east of Carpers Farm Way.
  • Continued construction of the retaining wall between eastbound Route 7 and the Colvin Run stream channel.
  • Continued maintenance on the Potomac Interceptor sanitary sewer. 
  • Abutment construction continued for the eastbound Route 7 bridge on the east side of Difficult Run.


  • Completed grading and placement of cement-treated aggregate, asphalt and curb construction along westbound Route 7 between Lyons Street and Trotting Horse Lane. 
  • Shifted traffic on westbound Route 7 to the north between Lyons Street and Forestville Drive.
  • Shifted traffic on eastbound Route 7 to the south between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.
  • Continued pipe installation for the water main distribution relocations between Towlston Road and Lewinsville Road.
  • Started storm sewer pipe crossings underneath Route 7 between Lewinsville Road and Laurel Hill Road.

Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

Retaining wall construction along eastbound Route 7 continues.
Crews are installing over 15 miles of storm pipe along Route 7.
In Case You Missed It
Construction activities along Route 7 will be ongoing through the fall and winter months, and additional traffic shifts and changes will occur along Route 7. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.
