Message from the Owner - SCFC is Settled In and Open
Things are running smoothly in the new SCFC Office. We may have lost the second floor view, but we made up for it with a great new location and no hangars to run into! If you have not had a chance to see it yet, stop by and look at our new home. We are still in the process of making some improvements, but everything is operational as of now.
 I want to extend my appreciation to the staff and members who worked hard to help us move into our new location, as well as the San Mateo County Airport Management team who ensured that the building would be ready on time. Considering all the external pressures involved in making a move of this size in the current conditions, we could not be more grateful for the massive team effort. Thank you everyone.

 Bottled Water Service
You asked and we listened! San Carlos Flight Center now has a water dispenser in the lobby for all your reusable water bottles as another step toward being a "green business". The hot and cold water dispenser for our members allows you to to refill your reusable water bottle or to brew a cup of tea. The 5-gallon water bottles are delivered and recycled by ReadyRefresh, a certified carbon-neutral company. This helps us to reduce our dependency on plastic water bottles, although we still have a fridge stocked of sodas and water bottles for those who forget their reusable bottle during this transition.

KSQL Runway Closure: Oct 19-24
San Mateo County will conduct repairs on the runway at San Carlos Airport during the third week of October. All flight operations will be suspended from Monday October 19 through Saturday October 24, as construction crews will be working around the clock to repave and resurface the runway.
 San Carlos Flight Center will remain open during this period, although only ground lessons and simulator training can take place. We are trying to arrange for some training planes to be located temporarily at another airport, so that flight training can continue. Plan ahead, and consider using this time to catch up on ground knowledge in preparation for a flight review, renew your instrument currency in the simulator, or get ahead in the ground work toward your next license or rating.
The airport is scheduled to reopen on October 25th for all flight operations, and San Carlos pilots will be rewarded with a new, smooth runway on which to showcase their landings.

Ramp Safety - Watch All Around You
 Many SCFC planes have now settled into their new Kilo tie-down spots, outside of the new Flight Center office. It is great for convenience and a shorter walk to the planes, but it does bring added risk. With the airplanes being in closer proximity to each other there is greater need to be aware of your surroundings, in front, in back, and on both sides.  In the former Flight Center parking area, we had the luxury of knowing that there were no people, vehicles, or other aircraft parked behind us. Not any more. It is now critical that every pilot check all around before starting the engine. Not only in front, but around the planes on either side and behind you. Prop wash can blow dust and grit into other planes or people's eyes. Safety means knowing what is around you in all directions.

Spotting Wildfires from the Air
Pilots have the ability to fly directly over terrain that is often inaccessible by other means of transportation, and gives us a spectacular view both directly below and for many miles ahead. Sadly, as Californians have witnessed again this year, forests and underbrush that are dry from a hot summer can easily catch fire. Often, pilots are the first people to notice the smoke from fires in remote areas, given our cruise vantage point. So, what should you do if you see a fire burning on the ground below you?
First, make sure you are not flying into an active fire-fighting zone, as you can create a hazard for large aerial water bombers and other fire fighting aircraft operating in the vicinity. Then when ATC is not busy, let them know of the conditions of the fire and the location. You can contact a Flight Service Station, if ATC is busy. Be prepared to give specific details about the location in a way that non-pilots can understand. By reporting fires, you may be able to play a pivotal role in fighting the next big CA wildfire!

Member Profile: Nico Ghilardi
SCFC: How long had you been thinking of flying before you started flight lessons?
NG: I had wanted to do it for longer than I can think. But there were times I had no time, and then there were times where I could not afford it. But it has been a lifelong dream and I am super happy that I now get to do it.
 SCFC: What part of flight training are you finding the most stimulating?
NG: I like the precision, the desire to get it just perfect. I am less interested in what I do well than in where I can improve and how. And also, it is just awesome to be out there. Finally, all the people I have met so far in the aviation community are so wonderful, and I really enjoy the social aspect of it as well.
SCFC: What motivated you to join the FlyOutGroup 5-day trip to Colorado?
NG: It sounded like the perfect way to get experience. And the timing is great for me, as I am just starting to work on cross-country training. A long cross-country trip like this fits in very well.
SCFC: What future certificates, ratings, or aircraft checkouts do you have planned after Private?
NG: I want to get at least an instrument rating, because I think that is good for flight safety. Perhaps, if everything goes well for me, I will do commercial and someday CFI. I could imagine worse ways to spend my retirement than teaching people how to fly. But that's a long way off. Mostly, my motivation is to always keep learning new things.

Upwind 2020 Crosses the Finish Line
Despite a year of interruption and uncertainty, the 2020 winners of the Upwind Summer Scholarship completed the program. The Upwind Foundation created a brief video for all of donors and pilots who supported the program this year.
 In the video, the Upwind pilots from the Class of 2020 express their thanks and gratitude for the difference that Upwind made in their lives. Despite the unusual challenges this summer, Upwind is proud to announce that all 4 Upwind participants have passed their checkrides and have earned their Private Pilot Certificate.
Upwind is entirely supported by pilot contributions and volunteers. Your support continues to make an enormous impact on the lives of young people far beyond the summer program. Thank you from both the Upwind Foundation and from San Carlos Flight Center.

FOG Full-Moon Flyers - Harris Ranch Oct 4 (Su) 7pm
As days grow shorter and we progress into fall, the Bay Area FlyOutGroup is planning multiple dinner flights on nights with a full moon. This is a great opportunity to bring your family on a short flight and share your love of flying with them.
Our restaurants all offer outside seating, and tables will be separated to accommodate social-distancing measures. Enjoy the pilot camaraderie from a safe distance, and continue to support local airport businesses.
 SCFC encourages student pilots to talk to their instructors to see how to incorporate the FOG dinner stop into a cross-country flight lesson. It is a great way to make your next flight fun, you get to enjoy a delicious meal, and experience the freedom that comes with your pilot license. Our next dinner flight will be on October 4th, where we'll venture down to Harris Ranch for some tasty farm food and enjoy the cooler fall air.

Flight Destination: Shelter Cover, CA (0Q5)
One of California's prettiest airport, Shelter Cove, is found on the Northern California coast in Humboldt County. Located right at the shoreline and surrounded by a nine hole golf course, this 3,400 foot runway sit atop a slight mesa and offers a challenge and maybe a surprise. When the surf swells are high, there can be a water spout that sprays above the cliffs on the North side, which can certainly grab your attention on short final when landing to the South. When winds are high, there can be significant low-level turbulence caused by nearby 3,000' MSL cliffs extending down even to traffic pattern altitude
 Plan to visit on a clear day but be ready with a backup plan if coastal fog blocks the airport. This is a great day trip from San Carlos. Lodging and good pizza available on North sideDuring summer season, and food is usually available on the South side of the airport. Parking is available on both sides but level parking is more abundant on the south side.
