October In Review...

October 5

Veritas School at Cleveland Park Stables

On Wednesday, October 5, FoRR was joined by a group of 14 students and two teachers from the Veritas School. They have volunteered with us previously through an out-of-the-water litter cleanup, but because they had additional people joining them this year, we were able to engage them by removing invasive plant species at the rain gardens in Cleveland Park Stables. They spent over two hours clearing out more than half of the largest bed and did a great job of identifying the desirable versus non-desirable vegetation. This was a wonderful way to educate and engage young members of our community, and conduct the maintenance necessary within Stables park. They were super enthusiastic and did a great job! We hope to have them out again soon.

October 8

Subaru Share the Love Kickoff Event

Fairway Subaru kicked off its "Share the Love" campaign on October 8 at Double Stamp Brewery. Friends of the Reedy River was there to help educate the community on how to get involved in protecting our local watershed. We were able to make lots of new connections and spend time with some of our other partners in the upstate like Conestee Nature Preserve, Trees Upstate, and Upstate Forever.

Thanks to Fairway Subaru for including FoRR in this fun afternoon!

October 16

OktoberForest Fest

Friends of the Reedy River participated in OktoberForest Fest on October 16 at Hampton Station. It was a fun event organized by The Nature Conservancy, Greenville Water, and Birds Fly South Ale Project to celebrate the interconnectivity of good beer, clean water, and healthy forests. FoRR held a drawing for a Yeti Cooler, and one of our very supportive FoRR volunteers ended up winning it! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our table for information, merchandise, and fun games!

October 26

Cleveland Park Stables Volunteer Event

FoRR, with the help of the City of Greenville Department of Parks and Recreation, hosted an Invasive Plant Pull at Cleveland Park Stables last week. We identified and removed invasive, non-native, and undesirable plant species to prepare the area for new native plants in the spring. Thank you to our awesome group of volunteers for your hard work!

Mast General Store: Friends Day

Mast General Store chose FoRR as their Friends Day partner last September 10. They donated 10% of the day's sales and asked each customer to round up their purchases to benefit our organization. We received a check last week for $4,079.68! That is after already receiving $1,103.32 from a round-up event last May. They have been a longtime community partner of ours, and we appreciate their continued support. Let's show our thanks by visiting their store on Main Street in downtown Greenville.
