Transform Ideas Into Action Items

Budgeting and Planning for 2024

Who says budgeting for the future can't be fun? Financial wellbeing is now considered a critical part of self-care, and as nonprofit leaders, we know how narrow the margins are for discretionary spending and unrestricted funds. Imagine your organization serving its mission to the fullest of its potential in 2024. What projects would you begin... or finally end? Which staff roles would you hire, or how would you supplement service delivery through use of external team members? Maybe it's time for you to write a new strategic plan, or refresh the plan you wrote two years ago. Maybe you and your Board would like some guidance while you organize into committees and subcommittees. Perhaps you need an HR professional to review your Staff Handbook, engage your employees in teambuilding initiatives, or develop a succession plan. Now is the time of year to think through your vision and begin to chart the financial path that will guide you from here to there. If you would like someone to bounce ideas around with, contact Amanda Lynn Barker, VP of Consulting Services at OneSource Center, to get the dialogue moving.

Collaboration between Generations

The "Better Together" series (hosted by AFP, PBPO, Interact for Health, Leadership Council, OneSource Center) are demonstrating the benefits of inter-agency collaboration. We have had great attendance at these informative sessions; working together to provide interesting programs, sharing the effort needed to make these possible, and combined marketing to reach more of you, delivering not only great programming and speakers, but also a wonderful opportunity for networking with other nonprofit leaders.

Our most recent event in the series occurred on Wednesday, October 3, 2023 at the Junior League of Cincinnati. We learned from Ms. Janet Harrah, Executive Director of Outreach, Haile/US Bank College of Business, NKU, about the demographic trends facing Cincinnati over the next 15-20 years, and how to understand generational differences in the work environment. The data presented is an important baseline to establish the need for necessary conversations within the nonprofit space that innovate workforce solutions. Email Christie Brown if you'd like a copy of the presentation. Our series will continue again with the fourth presentation in January, 2024.

Study: Nonprofits Struggling to Fill Job Vacancies across the Country

by National Council of Nonprofits

The National Council of Nonprofit's 2023 Nonprofit Workforce Survey Results reveal that nearly three out of four nonprofit organizations are unable to fill open position. They are also struggling to retain current staff in existing positions. This workforce shortage has greatly reduced organization's capacity to meet client needs, and the most vulnerable are suffering. The report cites the causes of staff attrition and long-term vacancies to be salary competition, budget constraints, burn out, contracting challenges, and no access to child care. Several innovative solutions are offered, including an ideological shift in funding philosophies, increased public policy activity around affordable housing, and funding positions at a higher wage to improve opportunities for individuals from historically marginalized or under-resources communities to equitably participate in meaningful nonprofit work.
