CANYONLANDS NATURAL HISTORY ASSOCIATION

National Public Lands Day Celebration

CNHA's annual National Public Lands Day Celebration event occurred on September 22, 2023 at the Moab Information Center!

The National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and US Forest Service joined us again this year to celebrate our public lands. Dead Horse State Park joined us for the first time this year, too!

CNHA was also delighted to welcome other like-minded organizations and individuals who share our passion for public lands to this great event: Science Moab, Grand County Active Transportation and Trails, Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks, and Jess Hough, the 2023 Community Artist in the Parks. Their presence and enthusiasm were instrumental in making this event a resounding success!

The atmosphere was further enhanced by the music of local band, Meander Cat, who provided great vibes that resonated with the spirit of the occasion!

A big thank you to everyone who attended, along with the agencies, organizations, and Meander Cat! It was a blast! We can't wait to do it again next year!

BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT

Canyon Country District Artist in Residence

The Bureau of Land Management is pleased announce our fall and spring artists in residence in Bears Ears National Monument. The BLM Monticello Field Office will be hosting Shelley Hull this fall and Leslie Ann Hauer in the spring. Each artist brings unique perspective and artistic style to their work. This residency is sponsored by Canyonlands Natural History Association and the Bureau of Land Management.

“I'm excited to return to this area, which has inspired my work and have time to explore more. Hiking, sketching and then painting from a place has become my process,” said Canyon Country Artist-in-Residence Shelley Hull.

Hull’s residency will last until Oct. 11 and include a public presentation announced at a later date. Canyonlands Natural History Association and the BLM encourage you to attend and learn about Hull’s work and her experience on public lands. To learn more about this program and future presentation, visit the BLM Canyon Country Facebook Page and Artist in Residence website.

Hauer is drawn to the abstract qualities within the reality of the landscape, the light and shadow, shape and color. Hauer finds joy in trying to capture the moment in time while painting en plein air. She feels “called” to some scenes within the landscape, and those images often involve details like rocks or flowers, the “little picture” within the broad, sometimes overwhelming, Western landscape. By making paintings that show the reality of the landscape, she is looking forward to sharing that landscape with those who may not have the ability or opportunity to spend time in these unique places. More details about Hauer’s residence will be shared in the spring.

Justin Holland Memorial Fund White Boots Recipient

A partnership between the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the family of Justin Holland provides an annual gift of a pair of custom-made Whites Boots to a Wildland Firefighter deemed Firefighter of the Year. Eliya Sherwood is the 2023 recipient of the yearly gift of Whites Boots. Eliya was voted in by a combined US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management inter-agency management committee.

"My heartfelt thanks goes out to the Holland family and CNHA for presenting me with a custom-made pair of high-quality fire boots," said Eliya. "Wildland firefighting provides an incredible opportunity to get outside while serving the public, and our feet are incredibly vital to our job. Comfortable, long-lasting boots are very hard to find, and this program is a wonderful way to support and invest in the fire community in such a practical fashion. I am so appreciative to be the recipient of the Justin Holland Award and for all those who facilitated this recognition."

Congratulations, Eliya!

Justin was a Wildland firefighter at the time of his death, and his nickname was Boots. His love for the outdoors and the support of his firefighting crew made it the wish of his family to create this fund to honor other firefighters and support his firefighting family.

November 2 | “2023 Community Artist in the Parks” by Jess Hough

Since 2009, the Community Artist in the Parks program has highlighted the connection between local artists and the landscapes of Arches and Canyonlands national parks and Hovenweep and Natural Bridges national monuments. Participating artists are residents of Grand, San Juan, or Montezuma counties who spend seven months creating art and talking with park visitors about their inspiration. Join Jess Hough as she discusses her experience as the 2023 Community Artist in the Parks. Jess is a local carpenter/handyman and artist based in Moab. Primarily an illustrator, she’s recently been developing cheap and accessible methods for at-home printmaking with DIY art supplies and tools made from reclaimed and recycled materials.

Community Artist in the Parks: Jess Hough

See how Jess turns her inspiration into art, or join her (with your own art supplies) for a side-by-side creative endeavor. Bring water, sun protection, and your imagination. October is Jess' final month as Artist in the Parks. We hope you get a chance to see her out and about!
