Hazardous waste container management

Container management violations are some of the most frequently cited violations by Kansas inspectors. In fact, “failure to maintain a closed container” and “failure to label the container with the words hazardous waste” are ranked near the top on BWM’s top-list of violations. In Kansas, all containers of hazardous waste must be labeled with the words “hazardous waste,” be closed except when adding or removing hazardous waste, be in good condition and contents must be compatible with the container. Hazardous waste storage containers must be inspected either monthly or weekly, and generators can use these calendars to document the inspections.

You can find more hazardous waste compliance information on PPI's website, including a short video regarding proper container management.

Tip: Containers that meet the definition of “RCRA empty” do NOT need to be managed as hazardous waste. For more details, consult page 13 of KDHE’s Hazardous Waste Generator Handbook. If you still have questions, email SBEAP or call 800-578-8898.

America Recycles Day is Nov. 15

On America Recycles Day, we recognize the importance and impact of recycling, which has contributed to American prosperity and the protection of our environment. The recycling rate has increased from less than 7% in 1960 to the current rate of 32 %. An EPA study found that recycling and reuse activities in the United States accounted for 681,000 jobs and $37.8 billion in wages.

EPA encourages every American to contribute by recycling right, not only on America Recycles Day, but all year long. This means checking with your local recycling provider to know what they will accept in your recycling bin. Visit EPA's website to learn more about the benefits of recycling, what you can do to reduce waste and how to recycle right.
