Public Meeting - More Housing Choices in Mississauga's Low-Rise Neighbourhoods

The City is taking steps to make housing more accessible to families, older adults, students, and everyone who would like to call Mississauga home. In line with the Housing Action Plan there are two key initiatives that will enhance gentle density across the City, which will be brought to the Planning and Development Committee on October 23, 2023.

1. Additional Residential Unit (ARU) Zoning: Staff will present recommendations for new zoning and official plan regulations tailored to Mississauga neighbourhoods. These regulations allow for options like garden suites, garage conversions, and laneway suites. Designed to align with provincial requirements, they allow for up to three residential units on a single lot. The regulations also specify the appropriate lot size for one- or two-storey ARUs and provide direction on their size and height.

2. Neighbourhood Zoning Review: Staff will provide an information report on ongoing work to simplify single-detached neighbourhood zones in Mississauga. This project aims to encourage semi-detached and smaller-sized homes by reducing lot size requirements, and enabling the creation of more lots within existing neighbourhoods. These changes would allow more housing types to be built in 99% of residential areas in Mississauga that currently allow single-detached homes only. This project will include opportunities for public engagement, and zoning recommendations are expected next year.

Apply to be a natural ice rink volunteer

Love skating in your community and looking to give back? Consider becoming a natural ice rink volunteer this winter season.

As a volunteer, you will make and maintain the rink and shovel snow off the ice surface when it snows. City staff will provide a heated rink hut with equipment and install the rink boards.

Natural ice rinks are generally open between January to March depending on the weather. Temperatures need to be below negative fives degrees Celsius for the water to freeze and create ice. Volunteers will need to be comfortable working outdoors in cold temperatures, likely in the late evening any day of the week, after-dark hours.

Interested in becoming a natural ice rink volunteer? Apply by Wednesday, November 15: mississauga.ca/events-and-attractions/parks/natural-ice-rinks/

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Update in Ward 11

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are actively enforcing the speed limit in Mississauga.

Speeding is a serious problem on Mississauga roads. ASE helps make our streets safer for everyone by encouraging drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit.

I am happy to report that we are seeing great results in Ward 11 with our ASE program. Operating speeds have decreased on average by 10km/h and speed limit compliance has increased by 30% in our ASE areas. Please see the table below for ASE areas in Ward 11.

Pedestrian Safety Month

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and Peel Regional Police would like to take this opportunity to remind residents about pedestrian safety and educate them on ways to become more visible.

With daylight hours decreasing and the cooler weather moving in, our community members will soon start wearing warmer clothes, such as hooded jackets and hats, for warmth. Popular colour choices worn by many are often dark colours. These factors increase the risk of a collision as pedestrians are less visible to motorists, and pedestrian visibility is obscured due to extra clothing.

Seven pedestrians have been struck and killed within the Region of Peel to date, and several more have sustained life-altering injuries. Risk factors for pedestrian safety increase as we move through the fall season. Pedestrians can reduce these risks by:

·        Wearing reflective clothing

·        Wearing brighter/light coloured coats/clothing/backpacks

·        Ensuring that approaching traffic has stopped before proceeding

·        Using crosswalks to cross the roadway when it is safe

·        Adhering to traffic control signals.

·        Avoid wearing earbuds or using cellphones when crossing the road

Pedestrian safety is about pedestrians and motorists doing their part to ensure they see the roadway in front of them. Motorists also play a role in keeping pedestrians safe. Motorists should ensure:

·        That their interior and exterior front windshields are clean of dust and debris

·        Ensure windshield washer fluid is topped up.

·        Make sure your complete headlight system is on.

·        Pay extra attention near intersections, as inattentive pedestrians could be attempting to cross against a traffic light.

·        Drive the speed limit

Together, we can make our roads a safer place for everyone. Click on the links below for pedestrian and road safety tips and information.

Speed Bumps Implemented on Erin Centre Blvd

As you may know, traffic calming uses physical devices or design features of roads such as speed humps or raised pedestrian crossings to help reduce excessive traffic speeds.

Traffic calming devices have been installed on several roadways in Ward 11 and have been working very effectively to manage speeding and keep our roadways safe for all users.

Most recently, speed bumps were implemented on Erin Centre Blvd and will make that roadway safer for the community. Next year, speed bumps are planned to be implemented on Bancroft Drive (2024) and Old Derry Rd (2024) after consultations with area residents. For more information about the City’s road safety and traffic calming programs, please visit mississauga.ca/roadsafety.
