Looking Back and Moving Forward with IDDSI
|
|
The IDDSI Board of Directors came together in Belgium in September 2022 following the ESSD congress to meet and discuss IDDSI past, present and future.
|
|
Past: It is hard to believe but it will be 10 years in 2023 since the IDDSI volunteer board came together to dream about creating a global common language for Dysphagia Diets. Thus began the journey.
The IDDSI Framework was first published in 2015 with a revision in 2019 to reflect the needs of people experiencing eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties. Resources were created to support the Framework and the work began to build awareness globally and to help move forward with implementation.
Present: Currently there are 50 IDDSI Reference Groups (IRG's) around the globe representing different countries, regions and specific areas of interest. The incredible work done by the volunteers of the IRG’s has seen IDDSI implementation move forward around the globe.
The work of IDDSI would also not be possible without the generous sponsors who have provided incredible support. Currently there are 38 sponsors.
Future: Looking to the future means that changes and transitions are inevitable.
A big change that took place at the 2022 meeting was bidding farewell to 3 Board Members who have elected to step down from the Board.
- Dr. Roberto Dantas – Brazil
- Dr. Jianshe Chen – China
- Dr. Jun Kayashita – Japan
We are so grateful for the time, energy and valued contributions of Drs Dantas, Chen, and Kayashita who have helped shape and steer the direction of IDDSI over the past 9 years. They will all be very much missed!

IDDSI Operations: There is always much work that goes on behind the scenes of any organization and IDDSI is no exception. Our operations team are headed up by Kevin Ly (IDDSI Operations Manager) and Alen Dominguez (IDDSI Meetings & Webinar Manager) who do an incredible job to ensure the smooth running of IDDSI.
The IDDSI Operations Team will work under the direction of Peter Lam who will function as CEO.
In moving forward, the Board of Directors are pleased to share our new mission statement which reflects our direction for the future:
IDDSI Mission Statement – revised September 2022:
To facilitate the safe consumption and enjoyment of food and drink by all persons with eating and drinking difficulties (dysphagia) by maintaining the IDDSI Framework, a common language and system of practical and valid measurement techniques for naming and describing food texture and drink thickness; continuing to provide free access to the IDDSI Framework, documents, and electronic resources; and fostering global implementation and use of IDDSI.
The IDDSI Board is very excited about the future of IDDSI and are looking forward to seeing implementation continue globally.
