Free chipping is back!

Funding for this project provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire Prevention Program as part of the California Climate Investments Program.

Our Chipping program has once again been funded by a CAL FIRE grant.

We request a donation rated at $75.00 per hour of service from those that are able to do so. This will help us extend the life of this grant and reach more of our neighbors.

October Notables

Clean the Fireplace/Chimney

If you heat your home with wood or pellets, have your chimney serviced and your stove or fireplace checked for leaks or other hazards. Make those arrangements ahead of cold weather.

Look at the pretty leaves

This time of year it is also important to keep those gutters clear and watch for accumulation of leaves on, and around structures.

Burn Permits are still suspended until you hear otherwise from an official source. Even if the air is cool and humidity seems higher, it's still not safe to burn green waste. If you have piles accumulating, be sure they're far from any structures and that there are hoses nearby, already connected to a water source.

Check here for burn status updates.

Updates for Firewise USA® Communities

Hi Neighbors,

Well, we are now within the weeks that typically are the most likely to have a wildfire start and become difficult to manage. This summer we experienced unusually high temperatures and the third year of drought. Not only is the vegetation dried-out, but much of the ground, especially in the forested lands, is as well. And the tangle of roots within our dense forests can sustain fire underground for weeks making it more difficult to extinguish. If the north winds arrive, please remain alert – day and night. Cal Fire reminds us, this is the time of year when fires go from a spark to a fire of thousands of acres in just a matter of hours.

Reminder for existing Firewise Communities: November 18th is the date this year to complete the uploading of your Time and Expense Investments for continued “In Good Standing” status for your Firewise Community. Please do be diligent in obtaining these reports from neighbors. The information collected, when tallied together, gives the Fire Safe Council good intel on the exceptional effort by residents and helps the grant application process succeed in attracting funding to needed services.

Additionally, the Communities noted below will need to provide an updated version of their Action Plan goals on the new Cal Fire template found at this link.

Jones Bar, Toller Ridge, The Cedars, You Bet, Glenwood-Maidu-Charlene, Hyatt-Blue Sage, Foxwood-Slate Creek, Deer Creek Southside, Greater Champion, Greenhorn.

As always, I’m available if you need any guidance. Enjoy Halloween…

Mahalo Nui Loa,

Firewise Coordinator
