Death Salon Seattle Re-cap

For those of you who weren't able to join us for Death Salon Seattle (September 9-10, 2017) you missed a wonderful, death positive event.  The sold out event saw  250 "death-lings" from around the world gathered for fabulous workshops, celebrations and "death over lunch" conversations.

Death Salon Seattle kicked off with the premier e of The Grief Dialogues , produced by PMA's board president, Elizabeth Coplan on Friday, September 8th.

Workshop topics covered grief, funeral and cemetery law, recompostion , how cultures affect death rituals, and introduced us to Resting Waters , a Seattle pet funeral home offering Biochemical Hydrolysis. Here is a wonderful recap of the whole weekend's events .  All the workshops were illustrated in art posters by the talented Silent James.

Many thanks to the University of Washington's School of Social Work and The Co-op Funeral Home as hosts and sponsors!

Keep your fingers crossed that Death Salon will swing back here in Seattle!

Biochemical Hydrolysis for Pets

People's Memorial will continue our efforts to have Biochemical Hydrolysis legalized for humans in the 2018 state legislative session.  We've been working to alleviate any opposition to the bill over the summer and will keep you updated on our progress later this fall.

In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that Biochemical Hydrolysis has many names including Aquamation, Resomation, Bio-Cremation, Alkaline Hydrolysis, and Water Cremation   It is now a legal option for humans in 15 states: California and Nevada are the most recent to legalize it.  A few additional states are Oregon, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, and Minnesota.

Resting Waters, in Seattle, offers this legal disposition method for pets and was recently featured in the Sunday Seattle Times' Pacific NW Magazine.

A Memorial for People's Memorial

Future gifts to People's Memorial Association, allows you to
retain  the assets you need during your lifetime and
and allow you to give generously in the future. Here are a couple of suggestions and sample text:
  • Designate PMA as a beneficiary: Of your IRA, 401(k), bank or investment account, or other asset.

  • Remember PMA in your will or living trust:  I give $___ to People's Memorial Association, a Washington nonprofit corporation located in Seattle, WA or its successor thereto, for any reason or purpose whatsoever, as determined by said nonprofit.
