May the World Unite in Fearless Friendship |
|
It's hard to find the words to talk about the distress and trauma that our world is going through right now. Natural disasters like the hurricanes in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the devastating earthquake in Mexico, and now the completely human created tragedy of the mass murder of 58 people and the shooting of more than 500 others while they were attending a concert.
It's enough to overwhelm even the most resilient spirit.
Yet, life goes on... and so must we.
T
he question is how? How do we retain our sense of humanity, allow ourselves to face and take in the reality of the trauma and pain and continue to open our hearts to those who are suffering, without losing ourselves in a pit of darkness that can leave us feeling paralyzed and hopeless?
It is not an easy challenge, yet it is what we are called to do. Only light can drive out the darkness. We must cultivate and spread our light - now more than ever!
|
Earlier today, I went searching for some support to bolster my emotional resolve. I wanted to see what others were doing to cope with the most recent tragedy, and not only draw inspiration from them, but decrease my sense of isolation.

This spoke to my heart. Rather than being reactive... to be responsive. To choose our actions based on love and compassion, rather than fear and anger, although it is important to feel our feelings - ALL of them, and allow them to release, rather than hold on to them and give them power over us. Feel the feelings... and let them go.
I also like the idea of 'assertive action.' One thing that helps dissolve feelings of powerlessness is to realize that we have choices. Choices in how we respond. Choices in how we act. Letting mindfulness and compassion be our guide, we can step forward into actions that serve our higher good, and that of those around us.
Building bridges, reaching out in kindness to those around us - these actions build our sense of community - our awareness that we are all connected. This is where healing can happen.
Doing what we can to help those in crisis or in pain, even if just offering a smile or a hug, helps to strengthen us all. Do what you can, and trust that others will do what you cannot. Take care of yourself, nurture your soul, and reach out to connect with others.
Scott also shared a translation of a "Peace Chant" from the Taittiyria Upanisad. I offer his translation here, as an intention for our world:
|
May your every step walking on this earth, each and every day, be mindful moments of living fully in gratitude for life itself while reflecting peace and compassion for all.
May the divine protect us while we are together.
May all obstacles be removed which stand in the way of our understanding the truth that all is one and there is no division or separation between us.
May we grasp this understanding with full comprehension and without doubt so all misunderstanding is dissolved within us.
May we not cherish hatred anger or displeasure.
May our hearts be full of love and may perfect friendship reign between us.
May the space around us be free of fear.
May the east and west, north and south be free of fear.
May the earth be free of fear.
May the past and future be free of fear.
May we have no foes. May we all be friends. And may the entire human race unite in one fearless friendship.
Om peace peace peace.
