Frank Polizzi, editor of
Feile Festa, which just celebrated its 10th year of publication, passed away this September after suffering from cancer for the past two years. Frank had a lot of goals and he reached a few of them:
A trilingual edition (English, Italian, and Sicilian) of love sonnets, A New Life with Bianca, was released by Bordighera Press in March 2014. Several chapter/stories were published from his novel, A Pity Beyond All Telling, and one of them was shortlisted for the Fish Prize in Ireland. Frank's new novel, Somewhere in the Stars made the 2014 Long list of the UK publisher, Lightship, for its "First Novel Prize." This novel was recently accepted for publication by Guernica Editions.

Jhumpa Lahiri reviewed
the collection for La Repubblica and found "their anguish, the trauma of being in the trenches [touching] ... making us understand how much the written word reveals who we are; that to recover the past is shocking but necessary, and how out of that discovery is born a new coherence."
This collection of personal writings offers readers a look beyond the grandiosity of war propaganda into the daily lives of soldiers fighting in the trenches.

Scholar Eugenio Ragni brings us an enlightening investigation into the early works of Giose Rimanelli in Giose 1959. This is an analysis of Rimanelli's controversial book,
Il mestiere del furbo
(1959), which caused Rimanelli to leave Italy for North America in exile. Ragni engages in both a philological and deconstructive act in his intimate reading of the book itself and the aftermath of the publication both for Rimanelli and Italian literary culture at large.
"Un bel giorno - primi anni Sessanta - [Antonio] Tagliacarne insistette perché acquistassi un volume della Sugar, presentandomelo come un testo critico fuori del coro, caustico, onestamente polemico e in qualche punto dissacrante, sorretto però sempre da un ragguardevole patrimonio di letture e da una verve scrittoria di ottima qualità. Era Il mestiere del furbo, firmato da uno sconosciutissimo A.G. Solari, alias Giose Rimanelli."

Upcoming Special Issue
Voices in Italian Americana: The Contemporary Folktale
We are gathering material for a special issue of
VIA to honor the creative spirit of Italian folktales. Writers may submit an original folktale of their own creation, or choose a previously published folktale from an existing source (such as Italo Calvino's
Italian Folktales,
Italian American Folklore by Malpezzi and Clements,
Italian Folktales in America by Mathias and Raspa, etc.) and rewrite it from a modern-day perspective. Submissions should take into consideration how Italian culture, traditions, ethnicity, and ways of family life have changed.
Query deadline is February 1, 2017
