Enjoy three classic films!
The Philadelphia Story
This classic upper-crust comedy is a brilliant adaptation of the Philip Barry play set in the high society of the Philadelphia "Mainline." Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) is a wealthy heiress in search of romance. Cary Grant plays her ex-husband, and James Stewart won an Academy Award for his role as the reporter who falls in love with her.

North by Northwest
From Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) being chased by the crop dusting bi-plane, to the climax atop the faces of Mount Rushmore, this Hitchcock classic never lets up. Roger, an unsuspecting businessman is mistaken for a spy by a secret agent (James Mason). One of Hitchcock's personal favorites, the film combines a tense, harrowing pace with the fear of calamity lurking behind every door-truly the work of a master.

Arsenic and Old Lace
Based on Joseph Kesselring's hit Broadway play, this madcap comedy is a blend of the bizarre and the mundane. A mild-mannered drama critic (Cary Grant) learns that his two kindly and loveable aunts have been poisoning people with elderberry wine. Two murderers (Peter Lorre and Raymond Massey) move into the aunts' house with the idea of adding a few corpses of their own.

Gift of Reading
Share your love for reading.
Donate a new or "like new" book for children (6 months - 5th grade). Since 1987, The Detroit Free Press has collected books for Detroit area children and helped them discover the joy of reading. Donated books will be distributed to Head Start programs, homeless shelters, agencies serving Braille-reading yougsters and Detroit school age children.
The Friends of GPPL have setup donation boxes at all three libraries and will be collecting books now through November 30, 2012. |
