Rector's Notes - October 16, 2014

'...which wert and art, and evermore shalt be...' (vs 2 of hymn 362)

What's that strange and fun to sing line above all about?  It's about the broad and boundless power of God at work, what else. Following on the heels of last Sunday's lively family folk style worship comes a big weekend in the life our church, a time for inreach and outreach.  On Saturday we call one and all to lend a hand at our annual fall Yard/Bake Sale for our OUTREACH MINISTRY.  The trailer is now full of great household items donated to raise funds to help our neighbors get through the cold stretch ahead. Just this week St. Matthew's has helped two families with utility costs, a lady needing clothing who is now in a shelter for domestic violence victims, and another soul just out of the hospital in need of several things.  Outreach Yard Sale  - lend a hand - anytime from 6:30 am until 2 pm.

Inreach wise St. Matthew's announces that Breakfast is Served Sunday morning from 8:45 - 9:30. Our kitchen chefs cook to your order during that time span and the company is terrific. At 10 a.m. worship we will have the joy of celebrating Holy Baptism. The Sr. Choir is primed to offer a special anthem, and  spirits will be high. Experience the power and grace of God which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Faithfully,

Rev. William Exner, Rector

P.S. - Since it is stewardship season at St. Matt's we're looking for acts for our Talent Show to be held on November 16 during Coffee Hour. Can you juggle? Got a card trick? Sing a Song? Tell a Joke? Read a Poem or Stand on Your Head? Etc... See our student coordinators Kat, Madison, Kathy, Meredith or Joan Stevens so we can sign you up. (two or three minutes of your talent will do the trick.)  Also, everyone please bring your 2015 Pledge Estimate card to worship that day or send it to the Office. Thanks!

Talent Acts Needed

Children, youth and adults are all invited to share your talent at St Matthew's annual Talent Show on Sunday, November 16th immediately following church. Can you twirl a baton, juggle, stand on your head, sing a song, play an instrument, tell story? Polish up your act and Let Maddie, Kat, Kathy, Alicia or Meredith know what you will do.

Gifts for ChIPS

Christmas gifts for Children of Incarcerated Parents, "ChIPS".

ChIPS is a ministry of the Episcopal Church in New Hampshire that collects and provides Christmas gifts and books for children of incarcerated parents at the state prison in Concord. Inmates select the gifts for their children and then present them at family Christmas visitations. ChIPS is nearing its 40th year of this special outreach ministry.

Two ways to participate, together or separately:
Purchase a book, gift or gifts and leave in original packaging (do NOT wrap). Gift values should not exceed $20 per gift. Several quality gifts under $20 are more useful than one expensive gift. Gifts for older children and teens are always needed. Gifts that are generic (appropriate for boys or girls) come in handy. If you purchase a gift that requires batteries, please purchase those as well and attach them to the gift. DVD's make excellent gifts but PG-13, PG, G only.

Gifts that can't be accepted: No used items or homemade items. No gift certificates, gift cards, movie tickets; they are too easily stolen. No jewelry, balloons, crayons, play dough, glue, bubbles, make up, long sticks, knitting needles, crochet hooks, paint brushes, glass items, clothing, sharp tools or toy weapons of any kind.

Cash gifts: Always appreciated, cash allows for the purchase of extra gifts to make up for the shortfall, which happens every year. If you aren't up to shopping, your gift of money is just as appreciated and needed. Make your checks payable to Diocese of New Hampshire, mark them "ChIPS," and tuck them in an envelope to place in the offering plate or mail directly to Diocese of New Hampshire 63 Green St., Concord NH 03301. Increments of $20 work nicely and makes writing the check quicker.

Drop off your gifts and checks in the box in the undercroft anytime from now through Sunday, November 2nd.  Our delegates will deliver them to convention next weekend.

Sunday School Greeter Needed

Could you help 4-5 Sundays during the school year greeting at Sunday School? It's easy and fun. Arrive at 9:45 to greet parents and children and get them signed in. Stay in the hallway to be available in case the teachers need help with a child or a project. Shepherd the children back to the undercroft by 10:50 in time for communion with their families. Safe Church training is required. Please see Jill Desrochers or Joan Alayne Stevens if interested. Thanks - it's a great way to meet our wonderful young families!

Got a free Thursday afternoon?

We need a person or two for 2 open slots at the Community Clothing Center as one of our wonderful volunteers is moving from the area. The 3rd & 5th Thursdays of the month are 3-5 pm. Please help!! See Amy Poisson or Joan Alayne Stevens for more information. Thanks!!

Everyday Pastoral Care:
Practicing Compassion Inside and Out

Quiet Day:  Saturday, November 15th 10AM - 2PM

Linnae Peterson's home: 26 First Ave, Goffstown

Presenters: Winnie Skeates, MTS, Linnae Peterson, MDiv, Jill Desrochers, Joan Alayne Stevens

A Quiet Day affords participants a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of daily life to strengthen your soul in the company of other seekers.  It is free & lunch is provided. Space is limited, please register by calling 497-2003 or emailing office@stmattsepiscopal.org

Everyday Pastoral Care: Practicing Compassion Inside & Out has to do with living kindness as Christ would do. Learn how to take care of yourself so you can be aware of and respond to the needs of others.

10AM Empathy: Jesus practiced everyday pastoral care with everyone. Story after story Jesus is scolded for spending time with so called sinners and tax collectors. He devoted time with them to listen and understand their experiences. What was it like to be labeled as a "sinner" in Jesus' time? Who are the people that challenge us today? What assumptions do you make about another person? Can we try and understand the other persons experience? We will explore how we can empathize with those with whom we struggle - both from Jesus' time and modern day through guided meditations.

11AM Re- Energize: Empathy is hard work! Did you ever notice how Jesus is always wandering off to pray? It is draining to really commit to listening and understanding another person. Even Jesus needed a break to recharge himself in order to be a continuing presence of a God's love to all he encountered. We will hear stories of how Jesus recharged himself and share our own methods for caring for ourselves.

11:30 AM Gentle Yoga stretches - wear comfortable clothing

12:15PM Lunch

1:15PM It Takes A Village! Often understanding ourselves is even harder than understanding others. The Quakers recognized that each of us has an inner teacher, a voice of truth, that offers the guidance and power we need to deal with our problems. But that inner voice is often garbled by various kinds of inward and outward interference. We will be introduced to how Quakers encourage each other to hear their own inner voices through listening circles.

2 PM Adjourn: Go forth in peace

GSOP Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting for Granite State Organizing Project is Saturday, Oct. 25th from  9:00AM to Noon at  Main Street United Methodist Church in Nashua. Snacks  and child care will be available

This is your opportunity for interfaith fellowship and  to educate yourself on community issues facing our state. Candidates for state senate and state representative from our community will be invited and asked to share with us their thoughts around concerns we have including the right to earn a living wage,  to have safe and affordable housing  and to be able to retire with dignity.

Our church is an active member of the Granite State Organizing Project. All members of the church and the community are invited to attend this important meeting. Please make every effort to attend and invite a friend. This is an important way to become informed about how we can help meet the needs of the people who live and work among us

GSOP is our chance to work together to address root causes of poverty - please join us on October 25th!

Thoughts on Learning

One of the things I admire about by grandmothers is that they were always learning. I remember them taking on French, ballroom dancing, calligraphy (despite arthritic hands), watercolor painting, and any number of other endeavors. Learning is a lifelong undertaking. There is always more to learn. This is particularly true of the spiritual life. We are called to learn more, to follow our wonder and curiosity into the next part of our lives in Christ. As we are learning, we have the opportunity to share what we are learning and exploring with our children. Read a book, listen to a podcast, explore scripture at a Bible Chat or prayer at the prayer class.

Here are a couple of ideas. Let me know if you are looking for a specific topic. (linnae.peterson@gmail.com)

Books

Simply Christian, by N. T. Wright. A readable look at what it means to be a Christian.

Sabbath in the Suburbs: A Family's Experiment with Holy Time, by MaryAnn McKibben. A look at how one family tried to make time for God and each other.

An Altar in the World, by Barbara Brown Taylor. Taking up a variety of "practices," Taylor helps us to look with new eyes and glimpse the sacred nature of such ordinary things as walking, laundry, getting lost, or the day to day experiences of living in our own skin.

Websites

"At the Edge of the Enclosure."
