The SAT is changing again?! That’s right, and this time the changes are substantial! For that reason Oberman Tutoring attended the winter conference of the National Test Prep Association, where a primary topic was the HUGE change coming to the SAT. This group of professional SAT/ACT tutors put our heads together to ensure that our students would be well prepared for the first digital SAT in March. In short, changes to the SAT include the following:
- The SAT will be online;
- Your work on part 1 of each section will determine how difficult your second section will be and what range of scores you are able to achieve;
- You will have the powerful DESMOS online calculator available at all times;
- There is no longer a section where the calculator is disallowed;
- There are changes within the test itself, such as shorter reading passages, fewer questions overall, and a shorter SAT! (For those of you who sat through the longer SAT, you know the exhausted feeling you had at the end of the marathon morning of testing!).
To help you excel, Oberman Tutoring is ready to lead in the following ways.
- In the math sections, the first question that Oberman Tutoring students are trained to ask themselves is “Can I solve this easily with Desmos?” Systems of equations are one of the clearest examples of a time to use Desmos for the quickest possible solution.
- We have students using the Bluebook app to take the 4 sample exams that the College Board provides.
- We have shifted to digital SAT study guides, which have different timing, so we talk frequently about appropriate pacing. By and large, students should have less time pressure on the digital SAT.
Of course, we continue to tutor for success on the ACT as well, since we know that some of you will prefer this test.
