When I was in high school, I spent one summer working as a lifeguard and swimming competitively. The next year, I spent the summer in a Governor's School program studying law and learning about utopias and dystopias. I enjoyed both experiences, and I fondly remember details of each. What I remember most vividly, however, is the contrast in the way my subsequent school year started.
After my summer of swimming pools, it took me a long time to get into the swing of the school year. Over those 2.5 summer months I had forgotten a great deal of academic content, but more importantly I wasn’t in the habit of using my academic mind for such a substantial period of time. I left school each day exhausted, for at least the first month.
After my summer of learning, starting school felt like a natural transition. While the details of many of my classes were not at my fingertips, I could access them much more quickly and easily because I had retained the habits of the mind all summer. My year started off strong, which led to more self-confidence and the belief that I could excel.
This summer our children will have many wonderful opportunities. The beauty of the length of our summer, and the length of each summer day, is that your children CAN have it all. Unsurprisingly, research supports the idea that continued summer learning makes a positive impact on a more successful start to the school year.
