FOCUS ON: A Tale of Two Summers

When I was in high school, I spent one summer working as a lifeguard and swimming competitively. The next year, I spent the summer in a Governor's School program studying law and learning about utopias and dystopias. I enjoyed both experiences, and I fondly remember details of each. What I remember most vividly, however, is the contrast in the way my subsequent school year started.

After my summer of swimming pools, it took me a long time to get into the swing of the school year. Over those 2.5 summer months I had forgotten a great deal of academic content, but more importantly I wasn’t in the habit of using my academic mind for such a substantial period of time. I left school each day exhausted, for at least the first month.

After my summer of learning, starting school felt like a natural transition. While the details of many of my classes were not at my fingertips, I could access them much more quickly and easily because I had retained the habits of the mind all summer. My year started off strong, which led to more self-confidence and the belief that I could excel.

This summer our children will have many wonderful opportunities. The beauty of the length of our summer, and the length of each summer day, is that your children CAN have it all. Unsurprisingly, research supports the idea that continued summer learning makes a positive impact on a more successful start to the school year.

Contact Oberman Tutoring today so that your children can continue their intellectual growth this summer! Both individual and group learning opportunities are available. We can’t wait to work with your children!

What Our Families Are Saying!

"Allen Wolmer is pretty much the most effective tutor we have ever used for any of our kids. Not sure of his magic but he turned my daughter's C's into consistent A's within 2–3 sessions and she continues to have success leading into the end of the school year. He is incredibly easy to work with in terms of coordinating times and is extremely patient and understanding with teens' ever changing schedules and needs. We can't stress enough what a success it has been having him in our tool box!"—Ashley, parent

"My daughter really appreciated all the time you [Marti Wayland] took with her and your vast knowledge and expert ability to easily explain very difficult concepts."

"I needed help with a specific section in my PreCalc class. Dr. Oberman was able to explain it in a way that was so easy to understand and I was doing problems on my own in no time! He was extremely patient and never got frustrated when I didn't understand the concept. 10/10 would recommend!!! (He also has a great sense of humor!)" — Noah, tutee

I’m Dr. Paul Oberman. I have worked in education for 34 years as a teacher, principal, and head of school, and I have a PhD in educational psychology. Those experiences shape my teaching philosophy:

  • All students can learn (and can learn math!), and learning should be fun.

  • Learning should build on a student’s belief that they can reach their goals, because this plays a big role in success.

  • Students learn math best when they can see how it has relevance in their lives, so I show them compelling examples throughout our work together.

  • I assure strong communication among tutor, family, and teacher. Success comes from the best methods shared among everyone.

  • Lastly, I know that students don’t care what you know unless they know that you care. I develop true connections with my students so they have a relationship context in which to ask questions, fail, and ultimately succeed.
