OYUnited National Council Holds Their Annual Retreat in Puerto Rico!
|
|
The OYUnited National Council of Young Leaders had their annual retreat in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Council members spent 3 days reflecting on their work, developing strategies for the future of the movement, and planning for the 2020 election. As part of planning for 2020, we started the process of revising our
“Recommendations to Increase Opportunity and Decrease Poverty in America,”
which will include input from the OYUnited Community Action Teams and Community Leaders. We aim to get these Recommendations in front of national and local candidates of both Parties to make the point that young people growing up in low-income communities have important ideas about the changes needed in our society to provide opportunity and responsibility for all.
We were joined by former council member, Teresa Rivera (Public Allies), who provided a rich cultural experience by sharing the history and culture of Puerto Rico, as well as a tour of historic sites – and of course the beautiful beaches. The council walked away refreshed, recharged, and ready for what’s to come in the coming years.
OYUnited will be actively mobilizing local voter registration and engagement through our Community Action Teams and individual youth organizers across the country over the next 12 months. We are fortunate to be receiving major support from the Carolina Fund for this non-partisan voter mobilization focused on low-income communities. Let our voices be taken seriously!
Stay tuned for updates on the movement and our policy recommendations!

The convening “Service to Politics,” provided a space for leaders with service backgrounds who are interested in politics to connect with each other, learn from influential speakers and powerful workshops, build new relationships, and take time for personal development and reflection.

OYUnited Leaders Join CLASP to Improve Systems for Opportunity Youth
|
|
OYUnited Leaders Lashon Amado, Kimberly Pham, Terry Green, Luis Bautista, and Deja Richards, attended CLASP’s Communities Collaborating to Reconnect Youth Network (CCRY) meeting in Los Angeles, CA. CCRY is a national learning community of leaders working across systems to help young people reconnect to education and career pathways. Originally comprising 15 members of the Department of Labor’s Youth Opportunity Movement, the CCRY Network has grown to almost 20 communities.
The theme of the meeting was “Partnerships for Shared Accountability: Making Systems Work,” which included conversations around federal policy (WIOA reauthorization, criminal justice reform, and more), incorporating mental health into workforce programs, and best practices for quality Performance Partnership Pilot (P3) and other pre-apprenticeship programs. Participants were also offered a tour of LA Trade Technical College, a P3 site. Finally, the OYUnited young leaders participated in Youth Leadership Fishbowl, where the young leaders and organizers discussed their visions for youth-led change, systemic obstacles to youth leadership, and systemic supports that contribute to change. The audience of systems leaders listened carefully.
