Greetings from OYE! Earlier this month, OYE celebrated its 6th birthday in El Progreso, Honduras. It was a time for OYE's youth scholars to take a break from carrying out environmental campaigns, leading capacity-building workshops, planning their city's premier youth sports tournament, and editing the latest issue of Jovenes youth magazine to celebrate their achievements. Read more about OYE's achievements below. Your support has carried Honduran youth through difficult times that have included political turmoil, an earthquake, flooding, and this year's educational crisis. Yet our scholars continue to thrive. In Honduras, only about 50% of 9th graders finish high school and 12% of high school graduates go onto college. By contrast, 95% of the OYE scholars finish high school, and 80% go onto college. In 2005, OYE only had enough resources to support 6 students. Today, we are an active youth development organization supporting 91 students and impacts thousands of young people. Not only that, but all of OYE's dynamic programs in the arts, sports, radio, and journalism are now entirely youth led. Unfortunately, supply cannot keep up with demand. This year, OYE could only offer scholarships to a portion of the students who needed them. It is devastating to turn students away, knowing that their chances of graduating high school will be diminished as a result. OYE envisions a society where all young people have the tools they need to become positive forces of change in their community. By making a gift to OYE each year, you have a direct impact on a young person's future. We ask you to give as generously as you can to help make OYE's vision a reality. Gifts of all sizes add up quickly! - To donate online, simply click here.
- Alternatively, checks made out to "OYE Honduras" can be mailed to: Organization for Youth Empowerment, 3351 18th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010.
The challenges Hondurans face today are not new, nor are they easily solved. However, OYE is a part of the solution. Our work is developing a new generation of leaders who are equipped with the confidence, knowledge, and drive to make a difference.
Thank you again for your past support and continued generosity as we expand and strengthen our work with Honduran youth.
