2024 OTM History Highlight

Save the date! The Old Trails Museum offers its free 2024 History Highlight on Saturday, April 20, at 2 pm in the La Posada Hotel Ballroom. Retired archaeologist Neil Weintraub will present Footsteps from the Past: Retracing the Epic 1928 Route 66, 3,400-Mile Bunion Derby Footrace Across Northern Arizona, followed by a question-and-answer session. On March 4, 1928, 199 of the world’s greatest long-distance runners from 24 countries embarked on an 84-day foot race across the United States. Weintraub will focus on the days they passed through northern Arizona—including Winslow—using newspaper accounts and photographs like the one above, which shows runners passing through what is now Parks, Arizona (courtesy of the Kaibab National Forest Archives). WHS 2024 Annual Meeting

The Winslow Historical Society hosted its 2023 Annual Meeting on November 12 at the Winslow Visitors’ Center/Hubbell Trading Post. The free event began with 62 attendees enjoying a Mexican buffet and a performance by local dance troupe Aguilas de Oro Folklorico (above). The business meeting’s 27 attendees voted on new Board members (see story below) and heard brief reports on museum activities over the past year by President Christa Knox, Treasurer Gale Jones, and OTM Director Ann-Mary Lutzick. They also drew tickets to win terrific door prizes donated by La Posada Hotel, Motor Palace Mercantile, the Winslow Chamber of Commerce, and the museum. Winners included Diane Hartz, Jackie Hartz, Majorie Herron, and Jenny Kincaid. Read More

African American History Month

The Old Trails Museum joins in the celebration of African American History Month, initiated in February 1926 to recognize the contributions that African Americans have made to our country. We invite you to visit the OTM Exhibits webpage to explore African Americans in Winslow: Scenes from Our History. One panel tells the story of Arizona Blues Hall of Fame inductee Tommy Dukes, who provided this promotional photo of himself (far left) with fellow Blue Bloods musicians Dale Cadell, John Willis, and Bob Blasi in the 1980s. Please contact OTM if you would like to contribute your or your family's story and photos to an exhibit panel.

2024 OTM Historical Calendar

OTM Collections

Working with OTM Collections

Every object, document, photo, textile, and oral history in the OTM Collections has been donated by current and former Winslow residents. These collections help museum staff and volunteers share Winslow's history with the public through exhibits, publications, and research opportunities like the one above, when in June 2023, Terry Morris (Patron Member) and Bert Peterson (Lifetime Member) made an appointment to come in and explore a topic of interest to them. OTM welcomes anyone who would to like to volunteer behind the scenes to catalog artifacts, photos, and oral histories, which is a great way to learn about Winslow's history!

Homol'ovi Exhibit Closed in 2023

The Life Along the River: Ancestral Hopi at Homol’ovi exhibit (above, at the Grand Opening) was on view at the Affeldt Mion Museum from January 2020 through March 2023 and seen by over 15,200 visitors. Created by the Arizona State Museum, the exhibit synthesized more than thirty years of archaeological research by the Homol’ovi Research Program to tell the story of the people who lived in seven villages along the nearby Little Colorado River in the 1300s. Homolovi State Park, the Winslow Arts Trust, and OTM, in cooperation with the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office, partnered to host the exhibit as well as a virtual presentation by Dr. E. Charles Adams, director of the Homol’ovi Research Program from 1985 to 2017. New Knowledge from Old Sites: Hopi at Homol’ovi is available on the OTM YouTube Channel and was viewed 161 times in 2023.

Donate or become a member to support our mission: Founded in 1997, the Winslow Historical Society receives, preserves, and interprets information and artifacts representing the history and cultures of the Winslow area, in order to engage and enlighten all visitors to the Old Trails Museum’s exhibits and programs.
