MEET PASTOR FRANK, LEADING LGBTQ AFFIRMING CHRUCH IN UGANDA

This Sunday, July 14, following Festival Worship

Pastor Frank Mukiliza is a long time mission partner and friend of Old South Church. He is the founder of Jesus Power Church in Uganda, an LGBTQ affirming church in Uganda. Pastor Frank’s church is the most publicly visible affirming church in the nation, a brave and prophetic stance in a country with harsh anti-LGBTQ laws. Following festival worship, you can meet and learn about Pastor Frank’s work, his faith, and his work with at risk youth and orphans. We will be collecting a love offering for pastor Frank as well considering ways to partner more as a church.

You, so beautifully knit together and fearfully wonderful, are invited to Yoga and Meditation, starting June 30 during the 10 o'clock hour in Mary Norton Hall. Journals and welcoming space provided, BYOM (...mat) or email amyecoe@gmail.com if you need one provided or have any questions.

Continuing through Labor Day, Festival Choir will suspend Thursday rehearsals, inviting all who wish to join us Sunday mornings at 10am to rehearse music for that day's 11am Festival Worship.

July 14: Suminagashi Paper Dying: Suminagashi or "floating ink" is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful.

July 21: Sunday Funday: we'll head to a playground, the library, or another fun place we decide upon

GODSPEED GEORGE SARGEANT

On Sunday, July 21st, at 11:00am Old South will be honoring George Sargeant for his 19 years of inspired service to the church. There will be amazing service music with a special massed choir, and you won't want to miss it! George is a consummate professional who earned the deep trust of all his colleagues. George will be missed, and we are also thrilled for him to be taking the reins at Plymouth church in Shaker Heights Ohio. There, he will helm a fabulous music program--soon to be all the more fabulous. And he'll also be a one day drive closer to tornado alley. Did you know George is a passionate storm chaser and weather enthusiast?

PURSE FOR GEORGE SARGEANT

In keeping with Old South tradition, we’re gathering a purse to honor George’s considerable tenure at Old South, and to celebrate his new role as Director of Music and the Arts at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights, Ohio. You can click here to make a donation; or, to contribute via check, please include "George’s purse" in the memo line (made out to Old South) and drop your check in an offering plate or mail it to the church (attention: Remy Hatfield-Gardner). Gifts can be made any time between now and the end of July. Please note: all gifts will be accounted so as to ensure tax deductibility for contributors.

GROWING AND LIVING IN COMMUNITY

TAKE THE OLD SOUTH SOCIAL JUSTICE SURVEY

The Christian Service and Outreach Committee is leading a rethink of how we pursue social justice as a congregation. Help us love and serve our city by sharing what you think and how you want to serve. The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete.

WELCOMING NEW NEIGHBORS

The flow of immigrants to Massachusetts continues to strain the state Emergency Shelter system and people are sleeping at Logan Airport and being transported back and forth daily to Welcome/Day centers and supporting congregations. The Old South New Neighbors Task Force is organizing to help. There are two ways to support this effort:

1) Donate blankets or roller suitcases: We will be collecting blankets (new or gently used but clean, twin or double) for overnight use, and midsize roller suitcases in good condition to move personal items back and forth. A drop-off box will be available in the Narthex on Sundays and in the coat room next to the Gordon Chapel entry on weekdays. We also need assistance delivering donations to Quincy. If you can help or have questions, please contact Margaret Sablove mfsablove@gmail.com.

2) Starting July 27 we will be hosting families one Saturday a month. There will be all day programming for adults and children that will include English lessons, cooking, play, crafts, excursions. This is an opportunity to be involved with neighbors from different cultures and make them feel welcome. If you’d like to join us, contact Carol Boggs clboggs1@gmail.com.

SUMMERTIME BOSTON WARM

TO MEET AT OLD SOUTH CHURCH

Fridays 8 AM-12 Noon

Continuing our long time partnership with common cathedral, we will host Boston Warm every Friday this summer in the Club Room. Our relationship with common cathedral spans many years as a regular beneficiary of our Christian Service and Outreach grants. Old South Church worked with a coalition of religious leaders to launch the “Boston Warm" daytime programs in late 2014, when the bridge to the Long Island Shelter was closed, abruptly halting access to the shelter and services. Boston Warm drop-in daytime program has been running for almost 10 years. See the Common Cathedral website commoncathedral.org/about to learn more!

GREEN TIP: Pollinators Need Our Help

Loss of habitat is one of the main reasons why we see fewer bees, butterflies and other insects visiting our gardens. Help slow and reverse the declines in bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies and other pollinators by growing a wide variety of plants including a mixture of native, near-native and exotic plants to support pollinator diversity. Get more tips from the Royal Horticultural Society here.
