Curriculum and Instruction Support staff provided an update to the American Civics Committee. Social studies aims to cultivate students into competent, responsible, patriotic and civil citizens. Staff highlighted the implementation of curriculum materials adopted by the Board in spring 2023 and how the social studies curriculum builds the attributes of the Portrait of a Graduate.
For grades K-5, the adopted materials aligned curriculum and provided a consistent lesson structure. By using best instructional practices, students engage in the inquiry process and have enhanced student experiences. Staff worked to align elementary social studies pacing with English language arts to deepen students’ understanding.
For grades 6-12, materials were adopted for core, elective and AP courses. The materials selected enhance the experience for students and staff by centering around literacy and inquiry in social studies classrooms. This allows students to make meaningful connections to the world in which they live. The connections include voter education, which enables students to learn how to vote and offers opportunities for students to get registered.
