Children's Department

The excitement is bubbling over in the Children’s Dept. of the Oakland Public Library! 

The 2024 “ADVENTURE BEGINS AT YOUR LIBRARY” Summer Reading Club is in full swing now! The festivities kicked off at the end of June, but there’s still plenty of time to join in! Pre-readers and readers use the READsquared registration/tracking software to earn small, medium, and large prizes for every goal met! A $100 Amazon Gift Card is the Grand Prize, which will be awarded in August. There will be something for everyone! Thanks to the New Friends of the Library, all programs are free of charge!

Preschool Story Time will be held Tuesdays (July 2nd - August 6th) and Thursdays (July 11th – August 8th) at 11:00 am. The programs will be held in the Library’s Story Tower. Both sessions will include stories, songs, and fingerplays. Registration is not required.


Tots Library Club, a program designed for the youngest library users, birth to 2-yrs.-old, and their caregivers, will be held Thursday, June 6th from 10:30 to 11:00 am. (This is the last session for Spring 2024.) Toys (yours or ours) will be available for a brief meet-and-greet from 10:30 to 11:00 am. A short segment of nursery rhymes, fingerplays, and songs will follow. The program will be held in the Library’s Story Tower. Registration is not required.


Weekly Craft Bags (to go) will be available each Wednesday from July 3rd to August 7th during the summer. Oakland children of all ages may come into the Children’s Dept. to pick up a small craft. One craft bag per child, please. Registration is not required.

Oakland children, ages 2 & up, and their caregivers, are invited to a “Toddler Dance Party” with Ms. Joyce on Friday, July 5th AND Friday, July 26th at 11:00 am. This program includes a fun combination of singing, stretching, and dance activities. The program will be held downstairs in the Library’s Meeting Room. Registration is required for EACH session. Each child, including siblings, must be registered. Registration is now being taken for the July 5th session, and begins Wednesday, July 10th for the July 26th session.

Jiggly Wiggly

Ms. Christina will present her wonderful “Jiggly Wiggly” music program Friday, July 12th at 11:00 am. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, and their caregivers, will be singing along and dancing to favorite songs. The program will be held downstairs in the Library’s Meeting Room. Registration is required, and is now being taken. Each child, including siblings, must be registered.

Teen Programs

Art Classes with Maddy & Friends


Class 1: Value

Monday, July 8 @3pm

○ Warmup: Students will be given paper with squiggly lines on them and be

challenged to make a picture using the lines.

○ Lesson: Students will learn the difference between value and color, the uses for

value in art, and how to effectively mix darker and lighter shades of a color.

○ Project: Students will paint a cityscape or mountains using layering making the

higher levels lighter and the lower levels darker.

Class 2: Complimentary Colors

Monday, July 15 @3pm

○ Warmup: Students will pull two words out of a bag and create a drawing

combining both words creatively.

○ Lesson: Students will learn why complimentary colors are used and how to

determine them on the color wheel.

○ Project: Students will paint any object that is their favorite color and use the color wheel to find the corresponding complementary color to be used as a background.

Class 3: Still Life

Monday, July 22 @3pm

○ Warmup: Students will start drawing an image, then after time is up, pass the

image to the person for their right to continue it. This will repeat until time for the

warmup is over.

○ Lesson: Students will learn what still life is and skills to help them copy what they see.

○ Project: Students will choose an object brought by the teachers and paint it to the best of their ability.

Class 4: Perspective

Monday, July 29 @3pm

○ Warmup: Students will pull two words out of a bag and create a drawing

combining both words creatively.

○ Lesson: Students will learn the definition of perspective, why it is used in art, and how to use it to make things look closer and further away.

○ Project: Students will paint an aquarium hallway using perspective skills and

filling the tanks with whatever animals they choose.
