Starting on May 10th, we will start our first Book Club Discussions. Our Book Club is a program of spiritual development reflecting on books with topics that we hope will deepen our relationship with God.
Our initial book will be Do I stay Christian? by Brian McLaren.
The subtitle is even better: A Guide for the Doubters, the Disappointed, and the Disillusioned. That is indeed a description of many of us in the independent Catholic movement who have become disengaged, disenfranchised and disaffected by the main stream church, and so we thought it was a good place to start.
About the author:
McLaren is a member of the faculty at Richard Rohr’s Center for Contemplation and Action in New Mexico. He was a long time pastor at Cedar Ridge Church in Spencerville, MD—a progressive, inclusive, ecumenical community.
Our Facilitator:
Fr. Steve Stahley will lead three discussion sessions each week of the series, at 7:00 PM in the evening via Zoom.
May 10th - Session 1: Do I stay Christian? How did the book strike you on the intellectual and emotional levels? What surprised you about the book? Do you think the author’s read on the current situation was accurate? Were you shaken by the reasons for leaving?
May 17th - Session 2: Do I stay a Christian? Is the author’s reasoning strong or weak? Were the reasons for staying genuine and authentic?
May 24th - Session 3: Where do we go from here? If we’re committed to staying Christian, how do we live that faith? What changes do we need to make to live our faith in a more authentic way? .
We hope you will join us for each session.
The book is available at all national outlets such as Amazon. As we shopped around however the best price seemed to be Book Outlet (click the name to go to the site)
Please email Fr. Steve to let him know of your interest.
