Inventing the Nonsmoker: The Unheralded Activists
in the History of the Cigarette
with Sarah Miilov
Friday, August 28th
10:30 - 11:30 AM

UVA History professor, Sarah Miilov will discuss the subject, welcome questions and comments. We tend to think about the history of the cigarette as a triumph of science and public health over powerful forces of corporate deception. But a longer look at the political history of the cigarette reveals the importance of the federal government in making the cigarette epidemic, and the important role that activists played in clearing the air. Anti-smoking activists won not by passing federal legislation, but by changing laws and rules at the local level. Their strategies may reveal lessons for today as we face federal inaction on a pressing issue of public health.

This course is free and open to the public.
