Speaker Event Tomorrow

Two Years In: Why is Support for Ukraine Waning?

Monday, April 1, 2024, 12:00pm–1:00pm

Location:

In-person, Evanston is Filled — Registration is Closed

Seats Available for Live-Stream to Chicago, Room 408 Wieboldt Hall

Two years ago, the US and Europe pledged unwavering support for Ukraine when Russia began a full-scale land, sea and air invasion of the country. Since then, global aid to Ukraine has reached $270 billion, yet support in the US is declining. Although 6 out of 10 Americans still support aid to Ukraine, politicians are questioning assistance. Peter Slevin (Professor, Medill School of Journalism) will discuss the state of the Ukraine/Russia war after two years and how, despite pledges by political leaders a few months ago, support appears to be waning. Is this decline in support real? How does the war in the Middle East and America’s domestic issues affect support? And what about the 2024 US General Election? Finally, how does this war end?

Hosted by the OLLI Academic Enrichment Committee.

In-person in Evanston is Filled.

Please email olli@northwestern.edu if you registered but can no longer attend, so that we may admit the next person on the waitlist.

Peter Slevin is a Medill professor who teaches classes on politics and the media, the US role in world affairs, and reporting strategies on current events—from the 2020 presidential campaign to the intersection of policing and race in Chicago. He spent a decade on The Washington Post’s national staff and is currently a contributing writer for The New Yorker, focusing on national politics. Continuing his work at the intersection of politics, media and the public, he is frequently asked to give lectures on the role of journalism in our current political climate.

Date: Wednesday, April 24, 2024

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, in the US, Black women are nearly three times as likely as white women to die from a maternal cause. As a number of high-profile cases recently demonstrated, Black women and their infants are at higher risk of morbidity and mortality regardless of income or education. Kristin Meyer, Management Analyst for the City of Evanston’s Department of Health and Human Services, will moderate a panel discussion including Debra Wesley, MSW, President of Sinai Community Institute, and Camille Williamson, LCSW, DSW, Program Manager for Health Equity at the American Medical Association. The discussion will focus on why this is happening, what can be done, and what this says about the broader issues of racial health care disparities in the US.

Hosted by the OLLI Evanston Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
