SUPPORT THE NIKOLAI FAMILY SPRING FUNDRAISER

Ann Nikolai and her family in front of the ocean

There are just a few days left to meet our goal of raising $12,000 before June 30 to honor Ann Nikolai's 12 years of service, and we have $4,631 to go. Will you donate today to help us make our goal?

Whether you donate $12, $24, or $120, your donation will help us provide financial support for members, offset our classroom rental fees, and keep OLLI running into the future. And the Nikolai family will help. For every $300 we receive on the way to our goal, the Nikolai family will donate $12 to OLLI.

MEMBER BENEFIT: SOCIAL MEETUPS

OLLI members sketching in Bradley 1

The summer social meetup term starts when spring classes end. In our last two social meetup terms, members went to the movies, sketched flowers from each other's gardens, and celebrated the new year on Zoom.

Social meetups are an easy, casual way to get together with other OLLI members. Any member can organize a meetup, and we invite you to bring your friends to meetups to give them a taste of what OLLI is all about.

Social meetups are very easy to organize. All you have to do is pick a day, time, and place, and then fill out the form to get it on the weekly calendar.

OVERHEARD AT OLLI

Earlier this month, OLLI Program Director Andrew Lavin, pictured, and volunteers Kendall Moalem and Dick Kennedy attended the Aging and Disability Resource Fair, organized by Passages. It was a busy and fruitful event with informative presentations and resources there to meet the public.

Many friends and members of OLLI stopped by the table to say hello. It was heartening to hear how many people loved OLLI, had heard "nothing but good things" about OLLI, and had wanted to join in the past. Hopefully some new friends join our community as a result of this event!

One woman who visited, having never heard of OLLI before, said, "I love that, that's amazing. I'm a lifelong student, so this is perfect for me. I can't switch off my curiosity!"

ANNUAL BUSINESS AND TOWN HALL MEETING

A slide asking What Do You Think

The Annual Business and Town Hall Meeting is a great time to learn more about how OLLI operates. Did you know, for example, that membership fees cover just 54% of OLLI expenses? Do you know that current actual cost per member for running OLLI is $377? Do you know how OLLI at Chico State's membership compares to other OLLIs across the country?

Knowing where we're going, and gaining member input along the way, helps ensure OLLI can deliver the type of programming and community that keeps you coming back. We look forward to sharing our plans with you, and we're especially eager to hear your thoughts and wishes.

BEGINNING SPANISH GEARS UP FOR TWO LEVELS IN FALL

A Spanish learning event

Memo Keswick has a BA in Spanish from Chico State and many years of activity with Spanish-speaking communities. For the last two years, he has brought that expertise to OLLI.

Memo's "Beginning Spanish" class uses the book Complete Spanish Step by Step, Premium 2nd Edition, by Barbara Bregstein. This fall, Memo will be leading two sections of "Beginning Spanish," one starting at the very beginning with chapter 1, and one picking up at chapter 5 for continuing participants.

These two classes are just two of the many classes coming up in the fall. Watch for the full catalog announcement on Monday, July 1 to find out more!

MEET A MEMBER: JEFF CARTER

Jeff Carter, pictured, grew up in Chico and attended Chico High before heading to Boston University and Georgetown for his undergraduate studies. He attended law school at Santa Clara Law School and was hired at a law firm in Chico. After about a decade at that firm, he started his own business law practice on Flume Street.

"Retiring was like going from 85 miles per hour in the fast lane to 20 miles per hour in the slow lane," Jeff said. Discovering OLLI has been a boon to Jeff, who loves discussing big ideas in David Donnell's class "Frankenstein's Dreams: Human Enhancement for Social Advancement?" and gaining a deeper understanding of history in Walter Coffey's class "The Civil War and Reconstruction with David Blight." In fact, he thought about enrolling in an online degree program before discovering OLLI. OLLI is quite a bargain compared to Georgetown!

"I'm a devotee for life," Jeff said enthusiastically. He's already ready for the fall term to begin even though we haven't yet finished spring. He even recruited a good friend to join in on Walter's class this spring. Say hi to Jeff if you haven't already met him. He's full of enthusiasm for OLLI and is one of the reasons we have such a vibrant and active community.
