NIKOLAI FAMILY SPRING FUNDRAISER

Ann Nikolai and her family in front of the ocean

To honor Ann Nikolai's 12 years of tireless and inspiring service to our community, we held the Nikolai Family Spring Fundraiser, which officially ended June 30. Our goal was $12,000. We raised a total of $7,956.

As we move toward the fall term, we will continue to use our donations to help us provide financial support for members, offset our classroom rental fees, and rebuild our rainy-day fund.

We appreciate anything you can give as we kick off our new fiscal year. Every bit helps to continue growing our program for returning and new members

MEET A MEMBER: CHERYL DEWELL

Image of Cheryl Dewell seated in a restaurant

Cheryl Dewell, pictured, has been an OLLI member for over a decade after a friend suggested she check out what our community has to offer. Lately, she has enjoyed taking collage classes, Gayle Womack's A Place of Inner Peace (In Spite of Chaos), and Valerie Althoff's feng shui classes, among many others.

"There's such a variety, you can't possibly take everything you want to," Cheryl said. And her OLLI transcript reflects that sentiment She has taken countless classes in past terms and is planning on taking many more in the fall.

Cheryl was born and raised in Minnesota before joining her sister in Anaheim for a number of years. She moved to Paradise with her husband in 1975 and continued working as operations officer for Chase bank, where she worked for 26 years.

Cheryl lived in Paradise at the time of the Camp Fire, and OLLI was a lifesaver during that catastrophe and the COVID pandemic right on its heels. "Having social and education meetings at set times each week is really good for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being." Cheryl has also volunteered as a classroom host, which deepens the OLLI experience.

Cheryl said, "The teachers are so good and so knowledgeable at OLLI."

ANNUAL BUSINESS AND TOWN HALL MEETING

A slide asking What Do You Think

The Annual Business and Town Hall Meeting is a great time to learn more about how OLLI operates. Did you know, for example, that membership fees cover just 54% of OLLI expenses? Do you know that current actual cost per member for running OLLI is $377? Do you know how OLLI at Chico State's membership compares to other OLLIs across the country?

Knowing where we're going, and gaining member input along the way, helps ensure OLLI can deliver the type of programming and community that keeps you coming back. We look forward to sharing our plans with you, and we're especially eager to hear your thoughts and wishes.

OVERHEARD AT OLLI

We had a fitting and fun send-off for Ann Nikolai and welcome to Andrew Lavin at the Welcome/Goodbye Reception on June 26th. Stories, laughter, and good company were shared – exactly what makes our community special!

Jerry Dunham, pictured, gave a short history of Ann's tenure, and he said something memorable: "When Ann was first hired, I was convinced she wouldn't last in this job. Not because she wasn't qualified for the position, but because she was overqualified. I was sure someone else at the university would see what we see and make her a better offer than we can. So, Ann, I have one request: don't tell anyone at Chico State about Andrew!"

Margaret Swick added to Jerry's praises of Ann:

"She brought us together, formed a cohesive group that:

teaches, studies, acts, dances, plays, cooks, learns, travels,

grows--

and loves being together!"

THE ART OF SEEING ART

Michaelangelo's David

We use our senses and memories to help us navigate daily life. Applying them when visiting galleries and museums can be as enlightening as reading labels. For example, your awe at the Grand Canyon can be similar to your awe when seeing Michelangelo's David.

This fall local artist and retired art professor Dolores Mitchell will explore the connection between viewing art and our personal experiences in The Art of Seeing Art. In advance of each class, participants will receive emails with playful exercises and recommended readings and videos.

Register for The Art of Seeing Art when registration opens on August 22 and learn more about how to use what you already know to experience art.

THE ADA TURNS 34 ON JULY 26

A man helps a woman out of a transport van

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA is a federal law that protects the rights of disabled people through a variety of requirements, including reasonable accommodations in workplaces and accessibility standards for public accommodations.

One kind of public accommodation regulated by the ADA is public transportation. Title II requires public transportation to be accessible and non-discriminatory. It also requires public transportation systems to offer paratransit services. In Butte County, the bus system provider is the B-Line. You can learn more about B-Line Paratransit on their website or join us for an information session later this month.
