Dear Families,
It was great to see the majority of you last Thursday at Curriculum Night. It made me so pleased to see a full house, to see joyful parent faces, and hear about the great things happening in each grade. Thank you for making it a priority, and for reaching out if you were were unable to attend. We know that you have many things to do in the evenings, thank you for supporting your children’s learning, and our school community. Reminder that tomorrow is school- appropriate free dress (see handbook on website) for your children if you were able to attend (even if you lost the slip-- honor/honest system).
Speaking of which, thank you also for the large crowd gathered last night for the kick-off Parent Org meeting! Remember that as parents/guardians, you are all automatically members of the Parent Org. Thank you to Kim Pankow (2nd grade mom) for stepping up to be the chair this year, and for the many other parents who have stepped up to take on new and returning roles! It is great!
Next week, we will begin MAP Testing in 1st- 8th grade. The testing is spread out between next week and the first part of October. This is our semi-annual standardized testing that occurs in math, reading and language arts (2nd-8th grade). The best way you can help your children to be ready is to make sure that they get enough rest, have a good breakfast, and pack a healthy snack and lunch. Encouraging a learning mindset, and positivity towards the test at home, also helps your child to feel comfortable and confident to do their very best on the test. Remind them that the test is untimed and to do their best. Not knowing every answer is okay. In fact, this test actually has thousands of test question combinations, and at times will even provide your child with more challenging questions, simply to see how they respond, problem solve and comprehend. Being challenged is a good thing. Your homeroom teacher will communicate test schedules with you in the coming days. Thank you for limiting during the day absences, to the best of your ability.
One more housekeeping piece- please get your Earthquake Kits turned in to your homeroom teachers as soon as possible, in addition to Tech Usage Agreement forms.
Future Event Invite/ Spread the Word! This year, we are having a Fall Open House focusing on PROSPECTIVE families. Know anyone who you think may want to be a part of the OLG community? Please invite and encourage them to attend on Thursday, October 10th from 4:30- 6:30.
Our first FCE will come home tomorrow. Keep an eye out!
Finally, ask your kids tonight about our Fire Drill today with the Fire Department. “In 25 years, I have never seen a fire drill that efficient, that quiet, that prepared, that calm. I am very impressed.” - Seattle Fire Department Firefighter They did a great job!
